Jake

“This is Rochelle,” Roman introduced. “If you flirt with her, I’ll kick your ass. Hit on her and you’re a dead man.”

I barked out a laugh. “Duly noted. Pleased to meet you, Rochelle. Tell me, what’s a gorgeous woman like you doing with a jackass like him?”

Roman growled out an expletive.

As Roman’s girlfriend shook my hand, she let out a melodic, girly sounding laugh. “When he said you were handsome and charming, I thought he was exaggerating, but now I see that he wasn’t.”

Roman glared at her and she shot me a sly wink then leaned in and whispered. “I’ve got to keep him on his toes.”

“I like this girl,” I told Roman, putting my arm around her shoulder. “I wondered why you’ve been keeping her all to yourself. Now I know.”

Roman glanced between us with a scowl. “Should I just leave now, give you two some alone time?”

I pretended to consider his question then shook my head and removed my arm from around her shoulder. “Don’t worry. She’s perfectly safe from me. I’m off the market.”

Rochelle kissed him on the cheek then excused herself to go to the bathroom. Roman watched her walk away then turned to me.

“Off the market? I call bullshit.”

When I shrugged, his playful expression disappeared. “Are you serious? You’re seeing someone?”

“I am.”

“A woman?”

I frowned. “What the hell’s that supposed to mean?”

He grinned. “It’s been so long since you showed any interest in the opposite sex, I was starting to have my doubts about you.”

“I’ve been busy, jerkoff. Some of us actually work for a living.”

“I work!” he defended.

“Yeah, when you’re not slacking off to take some girl to the beach.”

He glanced over his shoulder towards the bathroom with a look that bordered on adoration. “I’d do it all again, too. Besides, I didn’t hear you complaining when you took my money.”

A flash of humor crossed my face. “Technically, I should have paid you for that day, considering I met my girlfriend at that party.”

He stared at me, eyes wide and disbelieving. “Are you trying to tell me that rich chick from the party, the one whose ass nearly got me fired is now your girlfriend?”

“One and the same.”

“Well, shit, dude. Congratulations. I could tell how much you were feeling her.”

“I hope I didn’t get you into too much trouble that day.”

Roman shrugged. “Don’t sweat it, it’s all good.”

That fact that we hadn’t seen each other since, and had only communicated through a series of text messages and a handful of voicemails and two-minute conversations was testament to how much I’d been working. I hated that I didn’t have as much time for my friends as I used to have, but I’d been so focused on paying Ethan the money I owed him that certain other aspects of my life had fallen by the wayside.

I’d have to rectify that in the coming months. The club was as important to me as ever, but it couldn’t be the only thing in my life. I needed to make time for the people I cared about, too.
