Chapter Six

I run like mad. The trees are a blinding maze around me, whipping past on both sides as I careen down the slope. My feet slip on the wet forest floor, thick with branches and dead leaves and bugs. But I retain my footing and keep running, and I know how crucial that is.

If I fall now, and that thing’s on my tail, I’m as good as dead.

So I keep running, changing directions more than once as I make my way deeper into the woods. My heart is pounding, blood rushing through my veins. I want to turn to see if the creature’s still behind me, but I don’t dare.

I keep running, catching sight of a fallen tree on the forest floor in front of me. There’s no time to think about it. I run and jump, the big redwood tree almost too big to clear. But my past as a high school gymnast is serving me well, old instincts coming back. And the personal and self-defense training I’ve been taking with Jonathan personally is also coming into play.

I hit the top of the fallen redwood trunk, palms flat on the top of the trunk. I leap ahead from the top of the trunk, with more height and speed than I’m truly prepared for. I hit the forest floor hard, my ankle twisting a bit as I land. It hurts, but I ignore the pain and keep running.

Keep running, keep running.

Finally, my strength starts to fade fast. I know I can’t keep up this pace much longer. If the bear’s keeping pace, I can’t hear any trace of it. If he is, he’ll get me soon enough. Bound to trip or just slow down eventually.

But I keep running, thinking about Kayla Mitchell, Jonathan’s former personal assistant, and about Gerald Donahue, who was ready to kill me as payback for a failed writing career. I didn’t lay down for them, I remind myself, and I won’t lay down for this fucking bear either!

I keep on running, until my legs feel like they’re getting numb, my chest tight and aching, lungs strained. My ankle is throbbing, and I begin to wonder if I haven’t done more than just strained it.

And I think about Jonathan. If the bear’s not after me, it must have gone after him! Then I should be heading in the other direction, to help him!

I stop running. I stop and turn, and I’m flush with relief to see that the bear’s not on my tail, not charging up behind me for a quick kill. Exhaustion feels suddenly overwhelming, my body cramping forward around my panted breathing. I look around in every direction, but there’s no sign of the bear. I look up through the canopy, but I can’t find the sun. It’s sunk too low, and all I can see is the slowly darkening sky above, which means even greater danger all around.

Have to get back to Jonathan, I tell myself, find him, help him.

But another voice tells me, No.
