Chapter Seven

I run up the stairs, and in the corner of my eye, I can see Jonathan following me. But he’s not running the way I am. He takes measured, certain steps, that ad hoc garrote still in his fists as he approaches, slow, unhurried.

I think to scream, but something quiets me. I keep telling myself that it’s just an experiment, that he’s pushing me further than I expected, or thought I would have to go. But I have to keep my head; I have to stay focused. I could still ruin this chance if he’s just playing his part with unusual skill. But that only makes sense, even as I run out of time to think about it. All I can truly do is react, and do so as quickly as I can.

I get to the second floor and keep going, up to the third. With my pursuer keeping a steady pace, I can put more distance between us, and any precious bit of imagined safety is better than none at all.

Once at the top of the marble staircase, I run down the hall. Rooms open up on both sides, and I can’t even begin to guess which will provide the best cover. In truth, I already know I don’t have a chance, but I have to choose and choose quickly.

So I cut into one room; I’m not even sure what purpose or decoration the room has been put to. I leave the lights off and get down behind a big, wooden dresser of some sort. A shaft of moonlight streams in through the window. But all my attention is fixed on that hallway, footsteps slowly getting louder as he approaches.

The footsteps seem to arrive at the doorway to the room where I’m hiding. They stop, and I know he’s pausing to detect me, looking around to sense where I’m hiding. He’d asked me to dress for dinner, and I’d put on some perfume as I would normally have done. I have to crouch down in the dark and wonder if I haven’t given myself away, if he didn’t create that ruse just to get me to leave a calling card so he could sniff me out in the dark and then snuff me out.

But his footsteps resume and I can sense that he’s walking farther down the hall, choosing another room to investigate, second-guessing his hunting skills and my location.

I try to make myself as small as I can, but I know I can’t just keep hiding. I know he’ll find me eventually, and I can already feel my legs cramping up under me, muscles flexing involuntarily. Much longer in this position and I won't be able to stand up at all, much less launch an effective escape if necessary.

I know I have to turn the tables on him. If I keep waiting, I’m just a sitting duck. No, I tell myself, I won’t go down that way. He may be some powerful Hollywood big shot, and I guess I’m not much more than an eager personal assistant from Eugene, Oregon.
