ST JEROME

St Jerome was a priest in the early Church between c.347 and 420. He was born Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus in the Roman province of Dalmatia (which is now the region in which countries like Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina are to be found). He went to Rome to study Greek. Following that he travelled first to France and then to the Middle East, where he began to learn Hebrew. He then returned to Rome and was ordained as a priest. The problem was that he held what were considered to be such extreme views that he made many enemies and eventually was forced to leave Rome. At this point he returned to the Middle East and lived in Bethlehem.

He lived there in a hermit’s cell, near the traditional site of Jesus’ birth, for around thirty-four years. Indeed visitors to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem can, today, also visit Jerome’s cell where you can see graffiti left on the walls probably written by scribes who worked for him. During this time he translated the Bible and some of the books of the Apocrypha into Latin, working with both the original Hebrew and Greek, as well as the Septuagint.

As well as this extensive translation work, Jerome also wrote a large number of commentaries on the Bible as well as various essays against heretics, though scholars do not consider most of them to be very good.

Jerome died in Bethlehem in 420 AD.
