I read the interviews:
COM CHINS REFUSE EXTRADITIONS, SAYS
JUSTICE DEPT. HEAD
Or:
WHY DR. HOOGASIAN CHOSE LAWYER
Dr. Hoogasian, of whom I had never heard (nor had most anyone else) until then, had fled by sonic liner to sanctuary in the Yellow Sphere the moment my arrest hit the headlines. The private detective who had apparently been shadowing me to provide Dr. Hoogasian with a report on my outward behavior likewise fled. The âwhyâ article was of course deliberate journalistic misrepresentation, because in the one interview Hoogasian later granted from the sanctuary of his extradition-proof laboratory in some obscure city named Loo Foo, his answer about why he selected me was so simple as to infuriate the hypocritical public even further:
âWell, if you plan to save the world from itself, donât you have to start somewhere?â
What Dr. Hoogasian had started via me and the art gallery where Shirley lay in wait was a clinical field trial of the prototype of his answer to the Earthâs ever-mounting problems of mental illness, tension, juvenile rioting, neuroticism, divorce, adultery, drinking, and virtually all the other evils which have plagued mankind with increasing frequency and virulence in these last decades of the century in which we and the Com Chins further polarized into two armed camps. Technology, plus Dr. Hoogasianâs own damned, devilish brilliance as an inventor, had made it possible for each human being (as he envisioned it) to have at his disposal a personal safety valve for those inward torments which, unless harmlessly drained off, would further, in his view, poison society with billions of ever more anguished souls.
At the time of my conviction and disbarment, the papers resurrected 50-year-old lithographs of a fanciful small animal, the creation of a social cartoonist named Kapps or Cap; the fanciful animals had served the same purpose. But while Dr. Hoogasianâs theories (like Kappsâs) may have been eminently sound, their acceptance, and the acceptance of Dr. Hoogasianâs practical implementation, by human beings was debatableâ
As illustrated by my being sentenced to 48 years of corrective observation for Gross Immorality, Constitutional Lewdness, and Perverse Behavior.
Last month, after serving six years, I lost my last appeal.
I am under heavy sedation most of the time, and living, exacerbated by the prison conditions at Federal Corrective, is hell. Hitting the cell walls is no damn good, because they are resilient Saf-T-Foam and it is like striking marshmallows.
But what matters most now is not lost appeals but revenge. Revenge upon the hypocrites, the foolsâa whole world full of Grahams and Old Man Fleebsâagainst me; so much against me that they had to railroad me to jail as their scapegoat. Revenge, revenge. It is the theme of my waking moments, of my nightmares. Even heavy sedation cannot dull its urgency.
Today, I learned Dr. Hoogasian is alive and has not given up. Indeed, I think he has been welcome and put to work by the Com Chins as an ally.
The turnkey on our floor at Federal Corrective is a fat, moralistic old woman who, like all present penological attendants, has nothing but a Ph.
