Chapter Twelve

“You’re looking very dapper, Grandpa,” Addie said, complimenting Eduardo the following morning when she walked into the living room. She slowly moved around him, scrutinizing the man.

“Do you think so?” he asked uncertainly, looking down at his pressed navy blue shirt and freshly laundered jeans. “I was not sure what to wear.”

“Well, you certainly picked the right outfit, Grandpa. You look very handsome,” she told him with a smile. “You had just better hope that Zelda isn’t the jealous type because I can see a lot of ladies throwing themselves at you.”

Eduardo frowned ever so slightly as he eyed her. “Now I know that you are just making fun of me.”

But Addie only shook her head. “Never happen,” she assured him. “Besides, you make your clothes look good, Grandpa, not the other way around.”

Tickled by her comment, Eduardo laughed as he shook his head. “Where did you ever get that golden tongue of yours from?”

Her eyes shone as she answered, “I guess it just comes naturally.”

Her grandfather looked at her with just a little bit of doubt. However he played along, anyway. “Most likely. By the way, you look very pretty—as always.”

Addie pretended to shrug off the compliment, even though it secretly pleased her.

“It was just the first thing I grabbed out of my closet,” she told him. Addie saw the skeptical look her grandfather gave her. “Well, maybe it was the second thing I grabbed.”

“It is a very good choice,” he said with approval.

“Are you going to be picking Zelda up and bringing her to the party?” Addie asked as she went to the kitchen. She poured herself a cup of coffee, then brought it back to the living room and sat down on the sofa.

“I am. Do you need a ride?” he asked, more than willing to bring his granddaughter along with him.

“Oh, I wouldn’t want to cramp your style, Grandpa.”

The phrase caught him off guard. “Cramp my style?” he echoed, confused.

“I wouldn’t want to get in your way,” she explained.

Eduardo waved a hand at her words. “You could never get in my way, little one,” he insisted.

But Addie wasn’t as sure as he was. “You never know, Grandpa. Zelda might want to be alone with you.”

Now that she had accepted the fact that her grandfather was “keeping company,” as she’d heard her grandfather’s generation refer to dating someone, she wanted to make sure that he was comfortable with the situation.

Eduardo looked at her in all seriousness, then dismissed her suggestion. “Zelda knows how much my granddaughters mean to me. She would never want to come between us.”

“And Ellie and I appreciate that,” Addie responded with feeling. “But still, you definitely do deserve some alone time with Zelda, Grandpa. Now that Miss Joan has decided to back off and give both of you a little space, I would make good use of that situation if I were you.”

Amused, Eduardo chuckled to himself. “You are a good girl, Addie.”

Addie raised her chin. “I know,” she replied. Only the twinkle in her eyes gave her away.
