Thirty-one

‘Winston, listen to me.’

‘I am listening to you.’

Agneta went nearer to him. ‘What are you going to DO?’

Winston stepped back from the machine. For a moment, he looked as if he was in pain.

‘Ag … I don’t know. I’m sorry, girl, I’m not heartless, all right? I’m not taking this as if it’s just …’ He clicked his fingers. ‘I’m worried, like you. I don’t know what to do though, you see? You and me both. What to do?’

He sighed and returned to the blender, which whirred on, the batter hitting the perspex sides and pouring down.

‘I don’t know either, Wint. Where is Shenda? This is not normal and there is something wrong, we both know.’

Wint nodded, wiped his brow with the back of his hand, adjusted his white hat, and sighed again. Then he switched off the blender and reached for a baking tray.

‘Perhaps she’s just gone off. It happens.’

‘No. Shenda is not like that and you know it. I am not like that, Lois is not like that. We work hard and we like it here and we wouldn’t let you down, we wouldn’t just not come in and not tell you. Believe it.’

He leaned on the table. ‘OK, I believe it. Now, one more time, what do you want me to do?’

‘Go to the police.’

‘They won’t want to know.’

‘Why? In my country—’

‘Yeah, well, maybe yours is different but the police here won’t be interested, trust me.’
