Chapter Eleven
Emma held Addison’s hand as the plane lifted into the air. It had been a stressful weekend for Addison. Addison had wanted to make a trip home before filming began on Off Screen. She hadn’t visited Maine or her father in nearly two years. She also had never brought a girlfriend home to meet her father. Emma understood that Addison’s decision to bring Emma home spoke volumes about how the writer viewed their relationship. She had hoped that the trip would be a positive one for Addison. The reality broke her heart.
“Addy?” Emma called over.
Addison sighed. “I’m all right.”
Emma stroked Addison’s hand with her thumb. “No, you’re not,” she observed softly.
“I am. I promise,” Addison said with a squeeze to the hand holding hers.
Addison leaned her lead back and closed her eyes. In truth, going home had been difficult for her. Home had not felt comforting or welcoming for many years. After Addison’s mother passed away, life changed dramatically. Addison was only a month into her freshman year of college when her mother died. A brain aneurism took Victoria Blake away without warning. The loss left Addison’s father empty and bitter. The void Victoria Blake’s death created left a young Addison struggling to find her place in the world and feeling utterly alone. Tamara had been Addison’s rock during that time.
Addison’s father, Adam Blake was a stubborn man who had become set in his ways and his opinions. Addison’s mother served as the buffer between Addison and her father. Vicki Blake had been the heart of the Blake household. She had been more than Addison’s advocate, she had been Addison’s greatest cheerleader. In her heart, Addison felt certain that her mother would have loved Emma as much as Addison did. She was sure that her mother would have been proud to see Addison’s career skyrocketing.
Addison had hoped that some small flicker of her mother remained in her childhood home. She had dared to hope that time and distance would somehow miraculously bridge the gap between her life and her father’s. Now, she realized that had been a daydream. It was the understandable longing of a child. It would never be Addison’s reality as an adult.
Emma glanced back at Addison and felt her heart plummet in her chest. She could feel Addison’s disappointment. It was inconceivable to Emma that any parent could be so cruel to his child. Adam Blake had been cordial to Emma on their visit, not warm, but civil. It wasn’t until they were leaving that he made his feelings apparent. She replayed Adam Blake’s parting words to his daughter:
“You’ve made your decisions. I can’t change you. You want me to tell you that I think this is an acceptable way to live? I thought you would outgrow this nonsense,” Adam Blake admonished his daughter.
“Nonsense? Are you referring to my career or my relationship?” Addison asked pointedly.
Adam Blake chanced a quick glance at Emma. “Both,” he said. “You wanted to run off and join that circus. See where it has led you? Your mother—”
“Mom would have loved Em,” Addison said.
