Chapter Fifteen

Another month goes by, and a thick dusting of snow coats the island, making it look like an enchanting winter wonderland. The orange glow from the windows of the castle act like tiny beacons over the foggy, dark grey seas.

Gideon and I are on the beach beneath his quarters, training. I’m making progress on my earth magic, which is nice. I have my shield conjured, and I can dodge and deflect attacks Gideon throws at me. Though, I still have difficulty keeping my balance in check at the same time.

With my focus on balance, my pillars of earth shudder.

It’s an improvement, still.

“Professor Grey is still teaching, I see,” I say, not bothering to hide my disappointment.

Gideon chuckles. “You’re cute when you’re angry.”

“I’m not angry,” I argue. “I’m frustrated.”

He shrugs. “Close enough.” He shoots another ball of light at me and I duck into my shield, throwing an equally powerful shot at him.

So far, it’s three to one. Gideon’s favor.

But I’m so close to breaking even.

“We can’t trust him or Headmaster O’Neil. Besides, have you seen that thing creeping around in her office at night?”

Gideon falters, his eyebrows drawing closer together as his frown deepens. “I personally believe the new headmaster is a good person. She’s the scholarly type who would rather read and research battles than participate in them.”

I stand straighter. “Then how do you explain the Order still being here?”

He shakes his head. “If it would make you feel better, I’ll read her soul. This way, I can make sure she hasn’t changed over the years.”

“Can you do it soon?” I ask. “I have to know if I can go to her about the professor or not.”

Walking into a viper’s den? Pass.

And while we’re drowning in red tape over Professor Grey, I’ve been working up the courage to confront Anderson. Some days I’d see him in the hallway or in the garden and try to wait for an opportunity, but the guy is never alone and the conversation I want to have isn’t one I want students or professors to overhear. And there’s no way in hell I’m going to his room.

I’ll need to draw him out. Get him alone, but on my terms.

“I understand how you feel,” Gideon says, pulling me from my thoughts. “I can’t forcibly place Professor Grey into custody either. Not without her approval.”

I groan, dropping my shield to my side, thus, removing my guard. “I know.”

Gideon. My sweet, sexy commander takes advantage of my distraction. He blasts me with a powerful blow of light, and I sail through the air. I conjure my magic and the earth rises up to greet me, cushioning my fall with a blanket of snow.

As soon as the ground settles back in its rightful place, I sit up and jokingly glare at Gideon. “Cheater.”

He smiles. “Am I now?”

I nod, but I can’t help the smile that stretches my lips. “That was clever.”

“Oh, so glad you noticed.” He helps me up from the ground.

I chuckle. “Good session. Now I gotta go eat.
