The Passat rolls down Park Street, whisking us in the general direction of home. Flecks of water flit against the windshield, so apparently our lunch in the park endeavor ended just in time. The rain taps out a steady rhythm on the windshield, and the sound calms me a bit, I think.

I try to tell myself that Louise is just busy. She carted me along while she worked so we could spend some time together since she’s so swamped with cases right now. She’s got a lot on her mind and all that.

But I can’t help but feel rejected anyway. I get that when people don’t listen to me, I guess. I don’t know. Someone told me once that I have a habit of looking for rejection in all things.

Her phone buzzes from within her purse, and she digs it out and hands it to me.

“A text,” she says. “Will you check it?”

I’m confused for a split second, but I guess it’s because she’s driving. I hate using other people’s phones. Most of the time, I somehow press like 50 buttons on the touch screen accidentally as soon as the phone hits my hands, and then I’m panicking because the phone is calling someone saved in the contact list as “Mo-Mo,” and I’m in no mood to explain all of this to Mo-Mo just now.

Anyway, that doesn’t happen this time. I press a thingy and read the text.

“It’s Dennis,” I say. “He says, ‘You gotta meet me ASAP. It’s about your burn vic.’”

After a quick back and forth with Dennis, we change routes to meet him in the parking lot of a Marathon on West Street. I use the term quick loosely here, though. I had to type on the tiny keyboard, thumbs all atwitter. The worst.

We pull into the lot and park next to the police cruiser behind the building. Dennis gets out and strides over to the Passat. He wears a pair of wrap around Oakley’s that remind me of Glenn and Mark McGwire.

“This is some crazy shit,” he says en route.

He leans into the driver’s side window of the Passat. He looks across the car and sees me. His face looks blank for a second, and then something registers.

“What up, Grobnagger?” he says, reaching through the vehicle to shake my hand.

“Hey,” I say.

I never know if it’s better to answer any variation of “What’s up?” as though the person is literally asking what I’m up to or take it more as a general greeting and say hi. I feel dumb either way, so I guess there’s no way to win this game. Whatever.

“So check this out. That burn vic, Farber?” he says “His body – POOF - vanished. It ain’t at the morgue. It ain’t nowhere.”

“For real?” Louise says.

He smirks. I feel like Dennis is perpetually pleased with himself.

“How long do they keep bodies at the morgue?” I say.

“Someone’s been watching some CSI. So the thing is, we hadn’t officially identified him yet,” he says. “Louise says
