âAnd weâre done!â
Camilla was working tirelessly in her lab when the door suddenly slid open, her dear friend appearing in the entrance. ââ! Ernesta!â she exclaimed when she realized who had spoken earlier.
âHey, Camilla. Long time no see.â Ernesta waved to her with a smile, still yet to properly step inside.
âWhere have you been all this time?! I havenât been able to get in touch at allâ¦!â
Ever since the end of the Phoenix, Ernesta had taken to going on frequent, long absences from Allekantâor rather, from Asterisk itselfâto the point where Camilla hadnât heard from her in months now. She had, of course, tried to call her friend countless times, but on most occasions, the call simply wouldnât connect, and at those rare moments when it did, Ernesta merely mumbled on and on about equations and the like, as if half-asleep. It had reached a point where Camilla was seriously considering reporting her as missing.
âSorry, sorry, it was an important time for work I was entrusted with.â
âI get that⦠But it isnât anything shady, is it?â
Camilla herself was often asked to undertake work by outside research institutes, and it wasnât unusual that they could turn into long-term projects. For someone of Ernestaâs talents, it was only natural that those requests would be both more numerous and more significant.
That said, it had all gone a bit too far this time.
âCome on, Camilla, you know Iâm bound to confidentiality. Well, it was pretty boring work, to be honest, but the generous remuneration more than compensated for all that.â
âRemunerationâ¦?â Whatever she must have meant, it probably wasnât money. Given her current sponsors, the number of funds at her disposal was already practically limitless.
âAh, master! If you had told us you were coming back, we would have prepared a proper reception for you!â
âWelcome back, master.â
Ardy and Rimcy both hurried toward them from the depths of the lab.
âYou look well, you two. It looks like youâre both taking good care of Camilla.â
âTheyâve been a great help. Much better than the staff, thatâs for sure.â
Since handing over the leadership of Ferrovius to the next generation, Camilla, though still a student, was in a state of semiretirement (though, of course, she was still busy conducting her own research). The fact that, in spite of that, she had essentially secluded herself in her lab was because she was in the middle of developing a new type of Lux for Rimcy to use in the upcoming Lindvolus.
It was all so she could settle her dispute with Saya Sasamiya once and for all.
That said, having given up the factionâs leadership, she could no longer appropriate staff for private purposes. That was why she was having Ardy and Rimcy assist her.
The development of the autonomous puppets was originally a joint project between Ferrovius and Pygmalion, and both groups likewise had joint ownership over them. That meant they werenât Ferroviusâs to make sole use of, and so without Ernestaâs support, Camilla may very well have found herself working alone, which would have all but quashed her hopes of participating in the Lindvolus.
