‘Most definitely I’m interested. Miss Pendleton and Mrs Collins have picked up a lot of the administrative burden, so I have some free time.’

‘Colonel Fitzwarren over at Padgett Hall – the big house on the Liphook road – is writing his memoirs. He needs someone to decipher his handwriting and type them up. I immediately thought of you. I told him you had no training in stenography, but he seems to think that isn’t a problem. He also wants help to catalogue his library but says that can wait until the manuscript is completed. It could be a job of quite long duration. He’d want you every weekday from nine until one.’

‘The Mothers Union meetings are on Tuesday mornings.’

‘We can move the timing to the afternoon if you’re desperate to come along.’ She gave Alice a cheeky smile. ‘But you did say all the talk of children and babies was tedious.

‘Sorry. I did, didn’t I? How rude of me.’

‘Not at all. You’re quite right. Other people’s children are not a source of fascination. I only go because I have to show my face.’

‘What’s the colonel like?’

Eleanor chuckled. ‘I’ll leave you to find out. But put it this way, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if you were soon begging to return to the Mothers’ Union meetings.’

‘My goodness. I’ve just realised Padgett Hall may be the place where the Conservatives were having their meeting and threw me out.’

‘Very probably. Colonel Fitzwarren is the local party chairman.’

‘Then he won’t want to give me the job.’

‘If you turn up wearing a Votes for Women sash I’m sure he won’t, but I don’t imagine you were planning on doing that, were you?’

‘Of course not. A time and a place.’
