Søren opened the file Your friend’s blood sample with a sense of foreboding.

‘Shit,’ he exclaimed, when he had finished reading the document.

He took his mobile out of his pocket, found Henrik’s number and then he stopped.

‘Shit, shit, shit,’ he swore again.

He called Jeanette instead.

Henrik and Jeanette had been married since Henrik was at the Police Academy. They had two teenage daughters, and a baby on the way. That baby must be due any time soon, Søren thought. He believed Henrik had mentioned April as the due date. His call went to Jeanette’s voicemail and Søren asked her to call him as soon as possible.

Then he opened Joan Skov’s report, but his mind was no longer on the job. He kept thinking about Henrik. Suddenly he heard a ping from his laptop, and when he checked, there was a long email from Jacob Madsen.

Dear Søren, I’m really sorry to hear that Knud and Elvira are both dead. I realised that they had reached old age, but they always seemed indomitable to me. Cancer is a dreadful thing. We have changed our lifestyle completely since my mother died. It’s no guarantee, I know, but we have both started exercising, we try to eat healthily and be less stressed. Yes, I know it sounds a bit holier than thou, but when I saw my mother waste away in front of my eyes, I decided to do what I could to ensure my cause of death will be something else. What kind of cancer did Knud and Elvira die from?
