Las Vegas was always a good place to visit. Darren enjoyed it more on his time off, obviously, but he made a point to take a trip every couple of years. The Strip was famous for a reason, and it lived up to most expectations.

They checked in at a motel just off the Strip. It wasn’t as crowded, but it had open reservations and they took cash, both of which were important.

Darren and Lydia showered, dressed, and headed for the casinos. Neither really wanted to gamble, although the poker room was tempting for Darren. He hadn’t been back in a while.

Instead, they headed for the buffet, intent on filling Darren’s stomach. The Bellagio was the closest, and they slipped in with the crowds. It was cacophony on the floor, with slot machines going off everywhere. It was an illusion, Darren knew, made to keep people there. Instead, he guided Lydia to the buffet.

He could eat, but even he couldn’t conquer the buffet. Still he made a valiant effort. It wasn’t often he got to gorge himself.

“I can see why shifters would congregate here,” she said, watching him return with his fourth plate. Steak, eggs, crab legs, mostly protein. He was putting on weight for winter at this rate.

“Food’s plentiful, if you know where to get it,” he said. “Buffets are always an option for families of shifters, though we have to be careful they don’t cotton on to how much we eat in a sitting. There was a fox shifter I knew. She was about your size but could put away more food than me. We had to keep our dates to a monthly thing to avoid arousing suspicion.”

“Oh,” she said. Darren realized that he’d miss-stepped, talking about the fox shifter.

“It wasn’t like that,” he said. “Wolf shifters mate for life. She wasn’t interested. I courted her for a while, but her family had a mate picked out for her. Foxes scream when they meet their soul mate, you know that?”

She snorted. “You’re kidding.”

“Nope,” he said, cracking open a crab leg. He pulled out the meat, then set to work on the next. “They scream. Damnedest thing I ever saw. I’m pretty sure that they were playing a prank on everyone who witnessed their wedding reception, the shifter only one, I mean. Their parents insisted that it was a thing foxes do when they meet their soul mates for the first time. Crazy stuff.”

She stirred her drink, the ice clinking in the water glass.

“So you never met your mate?” she asked.

He resisted the urge to mention that he hadn’t until he’d taken this job, but that wouldn’t be welcome, reminding her of what they couldn’t have.

“No,” he said. “What about you? You seem like someone who hasn’t got it in them to settle down.”

Lydia tipped her head to the side, regarding him. “You’d think that. I was never really the ‘married to my high school sweetheart with 2.5 kids and a house with a white picket fence’ kind of person.”

“Most people I know aren’t,” he agreed.
