This was a pure piece of cinema narrative, impossible to tell effectively in theatre or a novel. I was playing with the audience’s desire for unity from disunity, subverting the expectation of dramatic coincidence.

The idea of coincidence is universal and, therefore, an essential dramatic device. Newspapers and TV consistently feature stories built around the theme: family members reunited by coincidence after 60 years; fatal accidents among siblings at the same time on the same stretch of road. We are extremely receptive to the possibility of coincidence and readily accept some bizarre scenarios when presented as fact (often when twins are the subject), which makes this situation a very useful tool in the dramatic structure.

It connects effectively with a number of other dramatic situations:

(2) DELIVERANCE

(6) DISASTER

(26) INCEST

(27) DISCOVERY OF THE DISHONOUR OF A LOVED ONE

(32) MISTAKEN JEALOUSY
