By the time morning arrived, Paul had spent hours stationed outside Josh’s office door where his brother had let Shelby have the couch to rest. He’d tried again to convince her to go to the hospital, but she’d refused to leave. She looked so fragile and beaten down. His heart ached to see her that way. She’d had a close call, too close, and he shuddered to think what might have happened to her if he hadn’t arrived at the hotel in time.

The idea that this maniac had gotten close enough to her to walk into her room worried him. This guy was clever and well trained. And he was clearly determined. He wouldn’t stop.

He spotted Josh and Cecile entering, carrying evidence boxes. They stopped to talk to Paul. “How is she holding up?”

Paul nodded toward her. “She’s strong. She’ll make it through. What did you find?”

“Not much. A few partial prints, but we don’t know yet if they’ll be enough to make an identification.”

“It’s a hotel. How do you know they’re his prints and not someone else’s? Where did you find them?”

“We found one on the door leading to the roof. Plus, we found prints at the rental house.”

Cecile stepped around him. “I took the liberty of packing Shelby’s bags for her and grabbing her purse and laptop.” She handed him the bag and computer case, and he thanked her for taking care of it. Shelby couldn’t go back to that room, not after this. Not only was it a crime scene, but the hotel as a whole had proven to be a soft target, even with a deputy at her door. She wasn’t safe there. Hopefully, he could convince her not to return at all but to take refuge at the Silver Star.

“Have you had the opportunity to ask her about her coworkers yet? If they might be involved?”

Paul remembered the schedule they’d found in Randall’s rental home. He shook his head. “Not yet, but I will.”

He headed for the door and pushed it open. Shelby sat up and rubbed her eyes. The lateness of the hour when she’d retired plus the night’s events had her weary. She needed to rest, but he doubted she would be able to sleep very soundly.

“Cecile brought your things from the hotel.”

She stood and took the bag and computer from him. “Thank her for me. Is there any news?”

“They collected some evidence, but it’s going to take a while to run everything and see if they get any hits.”

She sighed and sat down, and he saw his opening. “You remember when we told you we raided a rental house earlier that Randall leased when he came to town?”

“I do. Did you find anything?”

He nodded. “Josh said they recovered some prints, but we also found copies of your schedule, taken from your computer.”

Her eyes widened in surprise. “How could he have gotten that?”

“Is it possible someone in your office is behind this? They would have access to your calendar.”

She shook her head vehemently.
