By the time morning arrived, Paul had spent hours stationed outside Joshâs office door where his brother had let Shelby have the couch to rest. Heâd tried again to convince her to go to the hospital, but sheâd refused to leave. She looked so fragile and beaten down. His heart ached to see her that way. Sheâd had a close call, too close, and he shuddered to think what might have happened to her if he hadnât arrived at the hotel in time.
The idea that this maniac had gotten close enough to her to walk into her room worried him. This guy was clever and well trained. And he was clearly determined. He wouldnât stop.
He spotted Josh and Cecile entering, carrying evidence boxes. They stopped to talk to Paul. âHow is she holding up?â
Paul nodded toward her. âSheâs strong. Sheâll make it through. What did you find?â
âNot much. A few partial prints, but we donât know yet if theyâll be enough to make an identification.â
âItâs a hotel. How do you know theyâre his prints and not someone elseâs? Where did you find them?â
âWe found one on the door leading to the roof. Plus, we found prints at the rental house.â
Cecile stepped around him. âI took the liberty of packing Shelbyâs bags for her and grabbing her purse and laptop.â She handed him the bag and computer case, and he thanked her for taking care of it. Shelby couldnât go back to that room, not after this. Not only was it a crime scene, but the hotel as a whole had proven to be a soft target, even with a deputy at her door. She wasnât safe there. Hopefully, he could convince her not to return at all but to take refuge at the Silver Star.
âHave you had the opportunity to ask her about her coworkers yet? If they might be involved?â
Paul remembered the schedule theyâd found in Randallâs rental home. He shook his head. âNot yet, but I will.â
He headed for the door and pushed it open. Shelby sat up and rubbed her eyes. The lateness of the hour when sheâd retired plus the nightâs events had her weary. She needed to rest, but he doubted she would be able to sleep very soundly.
âCecile brought your things from the hotel.â
She stood and took the bag and computer from him. âThank her for me. Is there any news?â
âThey collected some evidence, but itâs going to take a while to run everything and see if they get any hits.â
She sighed and sat down, and he saw his opening. âYou remember when we told you we raided a rental house earlier that Randall leased when he came to town?â
âI do. Did you find anything?â
He nodded. âJosh said they recovered some prints, but we also found copies of your schedule, taken from your computer.â
Her eyes widened in surprise. âHow could he have gotten that?â
âIs it possible someone in your office is behind this? They would have access to your calendar.â
She shook her head vehemently.
