Chapter 42

England - Friday

Jamal Aboud was so tense and excited he had trouble concentrating. This was it! This was the final test before he would become a fully-fledged jihadist. This was what he’d wanted ever since he’d first been in discussions with his local Imam, back when they had talked about the aggressions the West had against Islam, about how there was only one true God and about how every good Muslim must follow the true teachings of Allah. He would do this and not fail. Amjad Wazir would also complete his mission, and then the two of them would journey to the land of his forefathers and join his holy brothers in their fight. God is Great, he thought, God truly is Great!

The journey took him over five hours, first onto the M62 motorway from Manchester, before turning south onto the M6 and later the M5 passing Birmingham and Gloucester, eventually exiting at junction 23 about 28 miles south of Bristol. The van was running OK but was somewhat old, he thought. He didn’t believe that it had been serviced particularly well, but he’d had a quick check of the engine, had made a few adjustments, replaced the oil, and was sure it would outlast this current job.

He was now on the A39 heading towards the small town called Street and decided to stop for a break and a sandwich in a quiet pull-off on the road. There were plenty of hitchhikers making their way as well, most of them were heavily laden down with camping kit and rucksacks. Seeing a trio of three young girls all walking along together, he beckoned them over.

“I’m going there as well. Do you want a lift?” he said.

Five minutes later, with their gear stowed in the back and three attractive girls sat on the bench seat next to him, he drove on, taking the A361 through Glastonbury. Smiling to himself, he again thought God is truly Great. Allahu Akbar.

A few miles further on and after passing the town of West Pennard, he took a right turn down a narrow road, before stopping at a gate. Three minutes later, after helping the girls out and giving them back their gear, he was showing his ticket at the Orange gate and answering the various security questions to an inquisitive guard. Shortly after, he drove on through the gate to find his allocated camping space in Campervan West, at the Glastonbury Music Festival 2016.
