Chapter Twelve: A Lesson with Ruby

Emily sat before Ruby across a broad oak table. They were surrounded by towering shelves of books. Ruby wore an expression of amusement. Spiteful amusement.

Under Yasmine’s direction, Ruby had brought Emily to Castle Sarpadelle’s palatial library. Ruby had led Emily past what must have been tens of thousands of books, rowed in vast cases. They’d passed down level after level, into what was surely the bedrock upon which the castle stood. Books were expensive, shockingly so, Emily knew. More so than gold, sometimes. This many, in one location, spoke of a wealth beyond Emily’s imagining.

Ruby was to help in Emily’s instruction, Yasmine had explained to her. Ruby would aid in Emily’s magical education by teaching her Faytongue, by explaining the fundamentals of sorcerous lore to her. But Ruby was a terrible teacher.

She seemed to delight in Emily’s ignorance. Ruby rolled her eyes at Emily, she guffawed at her, frequently, when Emily asked questions Ruby deemed to be hilariously foolish. Ruby erupted into peals of laughter as Emily tried to wrap her tongue around the complex, unfamiliar sounds of Faytongue.

Emily seethed, first with frustration, then with emotions stronger, as Ruby persisted. Hate was a strong word, but Emily felt it for Ruby, more and more, as she spent time with her. Ruby was vainglorious, she was mean spirited, she was malicious. When Emily next saw Yasmine, she’d petition to be taught by someone else, Emily decided.

“Try it again,” Ruby ordered, a vicious grin on her face. Then Ruby pronounced a word that was a barely discernible blend of syllables to Emily.

Emily did her best to hear it. She did her best to replicate what Ruby had just said.

Ruby collapsed into fits of laughter. “You’re too funny,” she said, when she was able to. “You’re such a clod. Honestly, Emily, you’re as sharp witted as a river-rolled cobble.”

Emily tensed her jaw. She realised she was grinding her teeth. Her fists were balled up, beneath the table.

“I really don’t see what all the fuss is about you. As far as I can tell, you don’t have any talent at all. It’s like teaching Faytongue to a cat.”

“Perhaps my talents lie elsewhere?”

Ruby raised an eyebrow. “Perhaps. Maybe you have some instinctual capacity for rutting? Some base aptitude for debauchery, no doubt, given your squalid little life before you came to us.”

Emily seethed. Yes, Emily was low-born, she was of peasant stock, whereas Ruby spoke with the bearing of aristocracy. But that gave Ruby no right to talk down to Emily, as if she was nothing, not here. As if Emily was a servant who Ruby was free to bully and belittle at her will. Surely it didn’t work like that in Castle Sarpadelle?

Emily had never met anyone who got so under her skin, who incensed her the way this woman did. Her every word, her tone, her gestures, the expressions she wore when she regarded Emily, every single thing she did, infuriated Emily. She wasn’t violent by nature, she
