Chapter 5

Tank

“This ugly sonovabitch is Buzz,” I say, introducing him to Rose. “He was the communications officer in my unit. I didn’t realize they had let you out.”

“Yeah, but I knew you finished your last tour, and that’s why I came to town looking for you.” He says with a rough smile, clapping me on the back.

“Yeah, fair enough, but how the hell did you find me?” I ask him.

“That’s what I’d like to know,” Rose asks, still a little weary of the newcomer who showed up at her door.

“Well I went to the only bar in town, and you weren't there so I didn’t have a fucking clue what to do next.” He laughs, “So I had a couple of beers and struck up a conversation with the bartender. Low and behold he knows about you and exactly where you were at the moment since you apparently stole his usual bartender for the evening. He gave me directions and here I am.”

“That’s some fuckin luck.” I laugh, happy to see someone I finally considered trustworthy on the outside.

“Will have a long talk with my boss about giving out my address, though,” I hear Rose commented under her breath.

The three of us sit down, start catching up, and getting to know each other. We crack open a couple of bottles of beer and order a pizza. The first good time Buzz and I have had in a long time.

As the evening winds down, Buzz clears his throat. “You know, there was something that I actually want to talk to you about, Tank.”

“What’s that?” I ask, in a soft voice as Rose had fallen asleep leaning against me and I didn’t want to wake her. I missed her warmth pressed up against him, though I didn’t want to admit it. Too much trouble down that road.

“I set up a little business venture before I left ‘Nam. I need a little help getting it off the ground.” He explains to me.

I smile. “Dammit man, I missed you. I’m just glad to see a familiar face. I don’t even care what the work is, count me in.” I tell him.

He returns the smile. “That’s good to hear. And if you miss our unit you are going to be happy to hear that Gunner and Ammo are in it with us. They are on their way to town, should be here in a day or two.”

“No shit?”

“Not one ounce.” He tells me, still grinning.

“Well hot damn, it’ll be nice to see those bastards. Nice to have everyone together and not have to worry about getting shot. At least, not as much.” I laugh a little, still not sure what Buzz has in store for us.

“Well, if everything goes right, we shouldn’t get shot at.” He scratches his chin thoughtfully, “The only thing I need to sort out in the immediate future is to figure out someplace to get set up and how to cover for the money we will be moving.”

“Y’know,” I tell him, “I just got kicked out of a motorcycle club.
