CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

TAYLOR

Sky Walk Lodge, Grand Canyon, Arizona

Taylor’s eyes fluttered open, and he could hear a beeping in the room. He turned his head to look around.

“Hello.” A beautiful face stared down at him.

He wrinkled his brow.

The woman came closer and removed his oxygen mask. “You have been gone for a month now.” She continued to move around his bed and raised it higher, then sat in the chair next to it. “Can you speak?” she asked.

Attempting to vocalize his thoughts, he opened his mouth, and then closed it.

“It may take a while.” She nodded.

Staring up, he seemed puzzled at the high wood-beamed ceilings, and the soft pink adobe walls.

“No, it’s not a hospital. They moved you here two weeks ago,” she answered his silent question.

Taylor swallowed and tried again, to speak.

The concerned woman reassuringly placed her hand over his. “It’s okay. You have had tubes in your throat for a while now.” She drew her eyes up as though she were concentrating. “Let me see, if I had been in a coma, what would I want to know first?” She gave him a bright smile as though she’d just thought of an answer and sat up a little straighter in her chair as she gripped his hand. “You were in a car accident,” she stated in a clear voice.

Blinking his eyes, he stared at her face.

“You received head injuries and went into a coma,” she continued. “Your name is Taylor Scott.” She tilted her head. “That’s your white man’s name, anyhow. Do you remember any of it?” She watched his face closely.

He shook his head.

“Not even your name?”

With a frustrated sigh, he shook his head again.

“Oh. The doctors said there may be some loss because of—”

Anxious, Taylor squeezed her hand.

“I don’t think I should be the one—”

“Who am I?” He released a heavy breath with the wheezing words. “Where is this place?” His voice was a mere whispery sound.

The woman stood up and backed away.

“No,” he whispered in a louder tone. “Just sit and tell me what you know.”

At the plea in his voice, she stood motionless.

“Starting with your—name,” he seemed to croak the words out.

Wearing a resigned expression, she sat back down. “It’s Kami.”

Taylor smiled.

At the smile, she stilled.

“So, how did I get into this accident?” he asked and rubbed the soreness at his throat.

“Um...I don’t know that.” Kami looked away as she answered.

“Do I know you?” His voice grew a little stronger.

“A little.” Kami had a thing for Taylor ever since they were kids, but he never knew she was even alive.

He took her hand again. “I thought so; a woman who looks like you? I don’t know how anyone could forget that.”

Kami swallowed nervously and pulled her hand away.

“We didn’t like each other or what?”

“We just weren’t close, that’s all.” She let out a nervous sounding laugh.

“So, where am I?”

With a keen perception, she followed his eyes to the large window. “At the Sky Walk Lodge of the Hualapai’s.”

“The hula what?”

At his apparent bemusement, Kami laughed and stood up.
