Chapter 9

For the first time, Adam was considering her in the wedding plans. They really had to hurry, and he couldn’t do it by himself.

Very hesitantly, he brought it up. Staring at his tea, Adam was unable to look at Julia as he said, “I’d like us to plan the wedding together. It’s far too much work for one person. Besides, it’s your wedding too - you may not want to marry me, but perhaps a nice wedding will make it more tolerable.”

Julia frowned, biting the corner of her peach painted lips. “Thank you; that’s very considerate.” She smiled lightly, brushing blonde hair behind her ear. It was unexpected and even a little startling - but it was lovely to know he was finally taking her seriously.

“As I chose the church for the wedding, I thought I would leave it up to you to decide what to do after. I could host a ball here, or we could hire somewhere - of course, we don’t need to do anything, if you don’t want to.”

It did seem a little silly. Having a party to celebrate a wedding neither husband nor wife wanted? Her mother and father would never let her hear the end of it. Despite that, it sounded like fun. Dancing and balls were something Julia had never even considered, never mind dreamed of attending. It might do her good - after all, if she was marrying a Duke she was going to attend many evenings like that.

“I think it would be nice for us to host something here. It may make it feel more like a home for me,” she said with a nod, “but don’t you think it may be a little hypocritical? I know you don’t want to marry me.” She left out the fact she didn’t want to marry him - she wasn’t sure it was even true any more. She had gone from refusal to resignation to something akin to excitement. If she had no choice in the matter, then why shouldn’t she look forward to it?

“What do you mean, I don’t want to marry you?”

Frowning lightly, Julia said, “well you don’t, do you? You said as much before.” She cast her eyes down, hands fidgeting with her skirts. Had she said the wrong thing again?

Apparently, she had. Adam crossed his arms over his chest, sitting up a little straighter. “Perhaps I’ve changed my mind. It’s not for you to decide what I do or don’t want to do.”

“No, I didn’t mean it like that! I’m sorry. I simply meant that it isn’t something you’re doing by choice.”

He laughed humorlessly, shaking his head. “You’re no better! You’re marrying me for money, not for love. The only reason your family even considered me was because of wealth and status. It seems like a very selfish thing to do.”

Julia jumped, tears pricking the corner of her eyes. She may hate her situation - but her family were only doing what they thought was best! How dare he
