“I WANT to give him a hug and take him home with me.” Jess gestured grandly with her wineglass. “He’s like a kitten, all small and helpless.”

“More like all claws and hissing at anyone who comes near.” Daniel ducked as Jess swatted at him. “No, okay, I know what you mean. I was thinking much the same earlier. Well, the hug bit, anyway.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Oh, yes?”

Daniel attempted nonchalance. “You know me, always making new friends.”

“Mm. And the last two attempts went so well for you.”

“Third time’s the charm?”

Jess looked at him carefully. “He really gets under your skin, doesn’t he? Is there something you’re not telling me?”

“No!” Daniel deliberately turned his back to where Will stood. “I just want to….” What? Be his knight in shining armor? Prove I can still pull the hot ones? “I just don’t like seeing him so unhappy, that’s all.”

“You big softie. Well, he’s just gone out to the balcony, if you really want to try your luck.”

“If you never see me again, tell my mother I love her.”

Daniel heard Jess giggling as he pushed his way through the room, heart pounding as he tried to perfect an opening line. All he could come up with were empty platitudes, but it turned out not to matter. By the time he reached the balcony, Will had vanished.

Daniel stood there, irresolute and disappointed, wondering why he cared so much. Sighing, he headed for the bar, diverting when he saw the sign for the gents. May as well make room first. A couple of men already stood at the urinals, chatting easily as he walked in.

“—t’s this I hear about you and that delicious young rower? You must be glad he’s around for another week?”

Nik barely glanced up at the door opening. “Rafe? No, not really. He’s enthusiastic, but no real skill.” He shook and turned to the sink.

“Will.” Daniel couldn’t stay silent. “His name is Will. Not Rafe.”

Nik stared for a second, then turned back to Pavel. “Hilariously, Rafe asked me earlier if he could stay with me for a day or two. Some crap about his parents kicking him out because of all the attention.”

“Really?” Pavel sounded genuinely shocked. “Did you say yes?”

“God no. I don’t need that kind of hassle.”

They finished up their business and left. Daniel was about to do the same when he heard what sounded like a stifled sob coming from behind a closed cubicle door.

He moved half a step closer, listening hard. “Hello?”

There was what might have been a faint gasp.

“Are you okay?”

This time Daniel definitely heard movement. His heart sank. “Will, is that you?” He knocked on the door gently.

“Leave me alone.” Will’s voice was thick with tears.

“You going to hide in there all night?”

“I’ve g-got nowhere better to be….”

“Will, honey, come on out. It’ll be okay, I promise.”

“It’s not okay!”

Daniel looked at the ceiling for inspiration. Where was Jess when he needed her? “Is it true what he said? That your parents kicked you out?”

The door swung open so fast Daniel had to jump back out of the way.
