When Callie regained her senses, the sun was setting and Mios was nowhere to be found. Callie was covered in a fresh bed of boughs. Her naked body ached. But, more urgently, her stomach rumbled. It’d been nearly a full day since she’d eaten anything and the lack of food was suddenly manifesting itself. Callie’s hands shook as she brushed away her coverings.

“Shit,” she whispered, still looking this way and that for Mios.

Callie stood on shaky legs. Her body didn’t feel like her own. She struggled to put one foot steadily in front of the other. She padded around their impromptu living area under the cliff’s face and found only shredded carcasses. No food. No water.

“Mios?” Callie called. “Mios!”

She wrapped her arms over her chest and walked slowly toward a path in the woods. Maybe she could find some berries. What was she thinking? She couldn’t identify good forest food from bad if her life depended on it. But maybe it did. Callie shook her head, trying to loosen the cobwebs. Her thoughts were frantic. The lightheadedness of severe hunger made concentrating on anything for more than a few seconds difficult.

Food.

Woods.

Berries.

Water.

Anything!

Callie stumbled along the path, looking from side to side for anything she could gnaw on. She called for Mios every few steps but there was no reply. Her lion god – she already thought of him as hers – was gone.

Had she been abandoned? Had he used her and left her? Off to find another virgin?

Callie started to run. Her addled mind convinced her that if she followed the path, she’d wind up at the castle again. She crashed through lashing branches and hopped over twisting roots, diving deeper into the forest.

She caught a glimpse of a shimmering pool to her right and turned to investigate. A root seemed to leap from the forest floor and wrap itself around her ankle. In a rush of swirling trees, water, brown, green, moss, men, and a flash of pain, Callie was face-first on the ground and struggling to breathe. She’d landed on a mound of dirt and the force knocked the wind from her longs.

Men?

Callie was sure she’d seen a face as she fell. She rolled on to her side, gasping for breath.

Four strong legs shifted in front of her – cloven feet practically danced on the moss near her head.

“Look what we have here,” a thin, male voice said. “A maiden in distress.”

“A naked maiden in distress,” another voice said.

“The best kind,” the first replied. “Now all we need are some more vats of that wine, hmmm?”

Callie finally sucked in one full breath. Just as she did, a man’s face appeared. The beast in front of her had knelt on its forelegs. Callie saw a wiry, powerful torso covered in fine fur. Limber arms crossed and uncrossed over the beast’s chest.

It was the face....it was the smiling – no, grinning – face of a man. Two small horns parted scraggly black hair on his head and his eyes gleamed with mischief.
