As he gazed at Teressa Aliss’s grim expression on the viewscreen, Kirk saw the determination that had made her the leader among her people. Yet there was also something else in her face, a prescient uneasiness that almost seemed to have expected and anticipated the onset of a planetary problem for her colony.

He reminded himself that living with the biology of an alien world, however Earthlike, always posed dangers to the biology of invaders. The evolutionary match was impossible, however parallel, and precautions had to be taken, adjustments had to be made.

Something on Merope IV, something natural to that world, was now making its own adjustments.

“We’re scanning the area around New Ibadan,” Kirk said, then turned aft toward Spock. “What does the scan show?”

“A moment, Captain,” Spock said.

Kirk turned forward again to face Teressa Aliss’s eyes. She gazed back at him without blinking, and then he heard the sound of someone else calling out to her. She rose quickly, leaning against her desk as she looked to her left at something offscreen.

“What’s going on?” Kirk asked.

Aliss lifted a hand. “I’ll be right with you, Captain.” Kirk saw Trent Ojuremi cross the room behind her. “Captain Cortés is here,” the First Citizen continued, “and he says he has something very important to ask me. I’ll see what he wants and get back to you.”

Kirk nodded. “Lieutenant Uhura,” he said, “keep this channel open.” Aliss had left her desk; he recognized the voice of Leander Cortés in the background, but could not make out what the Earthman was saying.

“Maintaining contact, sir,” Uhura said.

The First Citizen reappeared on the screen. “Captain Kirk,” she said, “I have just received a rather remarkable proposal from Captain Cortés, namely that we arm about a dozen of his people with phasers and send them out in a few of our land vehicles… to mow the lawn, as he puts it. He says that he already knows how to drive a land vehicle himself—someone in his host family showed him how—and he’s convinced that his comrades who haven’t driven them yet can learn just as quickly.”

The image of Cortés appeared next to her. “It’s true,” the captain of the Hawking added. “Much easier than driving a tank, or a truck, and the phasers seem simple enough to handle.”

Kirk felt a surge of admiration for the man. “Are you sure you want to do this?”

“Captain Kirk, when you found us, you brought dead men and women back to life. We have been living on borrowed time ever since. Rather than hoarding that time, we should spend it helping these people who welcomed us to their world.” Cortés lips formed a half-smile. “In any event, none of us will have a home here if we don’t stop this growth somehow. I insist—maybe this is all it will take to stop it.”

“Captain Kirk,” Aliss asked, “what are your thoughts? Is this worth trying?”

“I think it is. I commend Captain Cortés and his people for their offer.” Kirk looked aft. “Your opinion, Mr.
