Step Is Too Big

I stepped out from the restaurant bathroom and made my way back to our table. I was slightly disappointed that my mother didn’t have time to join us for my 19th birthday dinner, but I felt rejoiced as well. It wasn’t often that I got to spend time all alone with Gerald, my stepfather, so I saw this as a chance for us to connect. It had been few months since my mom and Gerald got married, but I still couldn’t stop myself from fantasizing about him from time to time — he was just so sweet and kind to me. Like no one else.

He kept asking me about boyfriends and I kept blushing, so I had to go to the bathroom. I was too afraid to tell him that I had never had one and that I was untouched. I hope he won’t bring it up again.

Gerald smiled big when he spotted me, his light green eyes locking onto me almost immediately when I turned the corner. The main course hadn’t arrived yet, but Gerald was munching down on his appetizer — some delicious–looking buffalo wings. My stomach churned hungrily as I sat down on the other side of the table and leaned back in my chair.

“These are great!” He exclaimed, pointing at the small basket with wings.

“Oh there’s dip for them too?” I asked as I spotted the small cups on his side of the table, suspiciously placed behind a roll of paper, as if he was hiding them.

“Yeah, blue mold cheese dip and garlic dip. Do you want some?” He asked and pushed them closer to me.

I took a wing and dipped it in the cheese dip, sinking my teeth into it and enjoying the explosive taste in my mouth. Mmmm. They were really good, too bad there weren’t more of them.

“So you never answered before you left,” My stepfather continued and finished his wing. “Do you have a boyfriend?”

God damn it, I thought and looked aside. I couldn’t run away from his questions — not again — I should just go ahead and tell him.

“No… I don’t.” I mumbled, tilting my head down in shame.

“What, no way! How is it possible that such a beautiful, young girl like you doesn’t have a boyfriend?” He asked, lifting my mood with his nice words. I raised my head to look at him, our eyes meeting again.

“I just haven’t found anyone…” I answered moodily.

“That’s a shame.” He mumbled. “Does that mean that you haven’t been with anyone then?” He then added.

Was he really asking me that?

“No… I haven’t.” I answered.

“If I was your age, I would be all over you!” Gerald said and turned to me. A smile crept over my face as he said it, making me feel happy and warm inside.

“Does age really matter?” I asked quietly, looking up into his eyes. He suddenly gasped while he was drinking, making him cough and put the glass down quickly.

“Well, no… it doesn’t. Age is just a number after all.
