Ellora ate and showered in the morning, but restlessness permeated her. She did not want to stay in the apartment all day and do what basically amounted to nothing. She wanted to busy herself so she would not think about June. Ellora dressed in a business suit and rainbow tie, told Abhay she was going out and drove to her parents' house. Not Understanding and Clover's cabin, but Lincoln and Nancy's house.

Lincoln was outside trimming bushes. He wore old-man shorts and a thin white T-shirt. He greeted Ellora with a smile. "Well, hello. Look at you.

Ellora patted her hair. "Like it?"

His smile remained. "Yes." Meaning no. "Mom's making lunch," Lincoln added.

Ellora went in. The aroma of roast beef caused her stomach to grumble. Mmm. Good stuff. "Hey, Mom."

Nancy stared at Ellora a long moment. First at her hair, then at her clothes. Then her shoes. "What have you done to yourself?" Nancy's question was a wail.

"I'm being who I am."

"By dressing like a man?"

"By dressing how I want to dress."

"Why like a man? Is it June's influence?"

"No, Mama, not because of June's influence. Just because I want to try new things."

Nancy shook her head slowly "You're not wearing makeup."

"No."

Nancy frowned.

"Something you should know, Mom."

"Yes?"

Ellora adjusted the knot on her tie. "I'm gay."

Nancy looked down, and Ellora studied every twitch, every eye blink from her mother. "You can't be gay," Nancy said, looking back up. "Your father and I didn't raise you to be gay. So don't you blame this on us."

Oh boy. "I'm not blaming it on anyone. It's nothing bad. It's nothing that needs blaming."

"It's June's influence. And your other parents' influence. They gave your sister no morals, no values."

"June's not my sister."

"She's my daughter!" Nancy hissed. "And she was raised by these people."

Ellora drew a deep breath and forbade herself not to tremble. "I thought you liked them. Understanding let you baptize me."

Nancy sniffed. "I have to be polite to them. But they're not who I would've picked to raise my daughter, no. At least they're not savages."

"I like them."

"Of course you do. You're their daughter."

"Aren't I yours, too?"

"Yes. Of course you are. But you're not gay, Ellie. You're not. Your new family's corrupting you. Come to church with us Sunday. Get re-baptized in church, hmm? Not that dirty lake."

"I've always been gay. You can accept me like this or not accept me. The fact is, I'm gay any way you look at it. I can stay and we can talk and have lunch. Or I can leave, and if I do, I promise you there's a good chance I'll never come back. You may not like Und and Clov, but they accept me for who I am. Please don’t' talk bad about them. I wouldn't let them talk bad about you in front of me, either."

Nancy turned away. She checked on the roast and the carrots and potatoes. "Stay," she whispered at last. "Stay please."
