Chapter Seventeen
Christopher pumped and pumped his legs, causing the swing to go higher into the sky. Toby ran back and forth next to him barking. Christopher imagined a bark like that most likely carried all the way to the clouds.
He heard the sound of a truck door slamming shut and jumped from the swing. Uncle Pete had driven his truck out to fix a fence. Whatever that meant.
Christopher had asked if he could go along, but Uncle Pete had said he had some thinking to do. Christopher didnât understand that at all. His uncle had to think to drive, to fix fence, and to check on the cows. Itâs not like anyone could stop thinking.
But now he was back. Maybe they could watch another Star Wars movie. He ran toward the truck. Toby tagged after him.
Uncle Pete was pulling some tools out of the back of his truck. He looked in Christopherâs direction but didnât seem to see him. Christopher knew his mom used to have that look when she was thinking hard. Maybe when he got to be an adult thinking would be harder than it was now.
Christopher skipped down the sidewalk. Every time he did he made sure to miss the cracks, which was hard because there were a lot. Toby trotted by his side.
âUncle Pete?â The sidewalk ended in gravel, and Christopher ran up to his uncleâs side. Then he glanced up to the apartment windows over the garage. âCan I sleep over at your house tonight? I like you and Betty.â
âI thought you were sleeping in the barn tonight.â
âYeah, I guess so.â His stomach felt all jumpy and funny when he thought about sleeping in the barn. It was the same type of feeling he had when he had to go to Bedford Elementary that first day.
âYou change your mind?â
âWell, what if something does come? The only fighting Sam knows how to do is on video games, and Emily is a girl. Sheâll probably run.â
âYouâre probably right, but Iâve made a deal with Grandpa. I told him Iâd stay up and listen for you. He thinks itâs animals tooâmost likely coons. This isnât the first time weâve had trouble with them in the garden.â
Christopher followed his Uncle Pete to the barn, watching as his uncle put a loop of wire stuff on the wall and the cutter thing on a hook.
Christopher looked around the barn, reminding himself it didnât look too scary. In fact it looked kind of fun. He tried to imagine what it would be like to sleep there in the dark. Did the milk cows snore? Were there really bats in the rafters like Emily said?
He kicked his foot against a clump of straw on the ground and imagined sleeping on the stuff. He also imagined writing a letter to his old teacher Mrs. Falleâthe one who used to read Little House on the Prairie to the class. He could write and tell her that heâd slept in a real barn.
Christopher imagined her reading his letter to the class just as sheâd read Lauraâs story.
