Chapter 5

They had spent every night together that week. It was just easier that way because they had been going in so early and staying so late. It was deep into the second week of the competition, and it showed on everyone’s face. Everyone was tired and irritable, it became harder and harder for them to excel at their jobs because they were all worn out. Not to mention Ralph and Bradley hadn’t eased back at all. They were on a constant war path; always looking for the tiniest little mistakes to scream about and correct.

Bradley had taken notice of Bee and MJ coming in together every morning and leaving together every night. At first he didn’t suspect anything but after talking to Ralph he had a clear picture of what he thought was going on.

“Ralph, can I talk to you for a second?” He asked one morning in their office.

“Yea, what’s up?”

“So, I don’t know if you’ve noticed but MJ and Bee have become very close. I think they might be sleeping together and I know your rules about that.”

“Wait, what makes you say that?” Ralph looked up at his boss, puzzled.

“They ride in together every morning, and most nights that I’m here I see them leave together. Not to mention, they whisper and laugh around each other all the time which seems a lot more like a relationship than just being friends. Wouldn’t you say?”

“Hmm, well it sure sounds like it. But honestly, I haven’t been paying attention to their morning routines. I tell you what though? I’ll keep an eye out and if it’s still going on and I notice over the next day or two we’ll say something. You know how I feel about that kind of behavior in the restaurant.” Ralph looked uneasy.

“Alright, that works,” Bradley was satisfied with that decision. Knowing that if it was going on, Ralph would be the one to find out.

The next morning the girls came in together, all smiles. This always had a positive impact on most of the employees because the girls were well liked by almost everyone. Seeing the girls excited to come to work made it a little bit easier for everyone else to do their jobs. That morning Ralph was watching them with eagle eyes. He saw them walk in together and watched their behavior together. He could tell there was something going on and he didn’t like it. He decided to wait until later that day to confront them because the kitchen auditors and the reporters were coming in.

The inspectors arrived around lunch time and they moved in between the kitchen staff as they worked. They checked the expiration dates on the foods and they checked the cleanliness of the countertops. They watched some of the cooking process and watched the guys plate the food. During all of that the reporters came in to interview some of the staff. Ralph was hidden away like always so the sous chef was next in line for the first interview.
