CHAPTER 9
This should have been the happiest time in his life. Jayden knew that. He also had no doubt he was making his mate miserable because he couldnât let go of the guilt. Ironically, that was only making him feel guiltier because he was ruining his mating.
The thing was, technically, Jayden was happy. No. It went far beyond just happy. Yet another thing that piled onto his guilt. How could he allow himself a moment of pleasure when heâd gotten his parents captured?
Staring out over the sea, this time in the cover of trees a short distance away from where he used to stand, Jayden shed a tear. His elephant shifted slightly in unease. It didnât want to be sad, not now, not when he had his mateâs arms to curl up in. At the same time, Jayden didnât know how else to be. His parents were out there somewhere, when they should have been safe at home.
âJayden.â Meir came up to him and placed a hand on his trunk. âI know this is hard, but Yosi assured us they are doing everything possible to find the ones we love.â
âYeah, man.â Surprised to find Shmuel in his human form, Jayden turned his head toward him. Shmuel held his hands out from his body and turned around slowly as if showing off. âI know. Iâm not sure why I decided to shift, but it felt right somehow.â
His reed-thin friend rested his head against Jaydenâs leg. âI get it. I miss my brother and sister. But we need to stay strong for them. When theyâre found, theyâre going to need us.â
He appreciated Shmuelâs confidence that their loved ones would be rescued. Jayden wasnât so sure.
âCan you at least shift so we can talk?â Meir asked.
Not having a reason not to, Jayden did as asked. Meir already had his clothes in hand. Taking them, Jayden quickly slipped them on.
Instead of talking, he stared out at the ocean, needing the serenity it gave him. It wasnât as good as being in Teddyâs arms, but it also didnât cause his guilt to intensify.
âIf you talk about it, it might help,â Shmuel said.
Jayden didnât think so.
Thankfully, he didnât have to respond because Leilany came running up the path. âGood, youâre here,â she said looking right at Jayden. âI just came from the computer room and your mate is telling everyone if they rescue our people, theyâll be slaughtered. He almost seemed like that would make him happy.â
Jayden wasnât sure why Leilany hated Teddy so much. Admittedly, their first introduction hadnât been good, when Teddy told Yosi he should make them all leave, but that was before. Before he realized Jayden was his mate. Before heâd realized he was being an ass. Before heâd apologized and had gone out of his way to make it up to each of Jaydenâs friends.
Everyone had graciously accepted it, except Leilany. Sheâd actually spit at Teddyâs feet and told him he should rot in hell. Jayden had hoped, in time, sheâd realize she was being unreasonable.
