Chapter Seven
I had never cried so much before in my life. The mental picture of Emily in Nick’s arms kept replaying itself inside my head over and over until I thought I’d really lose it. I felt like I was dead and alive at the same time and living inside my own shadowy dream. My absolute existence had come to end. I was no longer aware of who I was or where I belonged.
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was Nick. I powered the phone off and dropped it to the floor. Jacob said nothing to me as we drove toward the horizon. I couldn’t tell him what had happened because it was too painful to put it into words. I just kept crying inconsolably and staring outside the passenger window.
He drove for a while and stopped only once at a gas station to buy a few snacks, but I wasn’t hungry or wanted anything to eat. “Hey, John, would you like some music? I always like to listen to music when I’m upset. It helps.”
I shrugged and nodded.
He turned on the radio. The song playing immediately caught my attention. It was Nelly Furtado’s Try. That was the day I fell in love with her. The song had a strong melancholic essence, yet it talked about the passion of loving. It shattered my soul even more. It was one of the saddest songs I’d ever heard. It felt like a bullet straight into my heart. Pretty soon, more tears invaded my eyes.
“Sorry,” Jacob murmured reaching for the radio.
“No. Please, leave it.” I listened to the song and silently cried. After it finished, I turned off the radio. Jacob wanted to say something, but he could not find the proper words to comfort my broken heart and soul. He faced the road again and continued driving in silence for a few more minutes.
“Everything’s going to be fine, John. I promise.”
I managed to break a smile. All of a sudden, I came face to face with sparkling seawater. St. Peter’s Town was approximately forty-five minutes inland and I had no idea where I was now. I turned to Jacob wiping my tears from my face. “Where are we?”
“Raritan Bay Beach.”
I nodded, staring blankly at the sandy beaches. To me, they seemed dull and boring. I just wanted to curl up in my bed and cry into my pillow. Jacob drove until we stopped in front of a luxurious three story beach house behind high iron gates. It looked like one of those places you’d expect a movie or rock star would live in. He pulled a tiny remote out of the glove compartment and automatically opened the front gates. It appeared that no one was inside the residence. My head started spinning like a peg top and everything went black.
When I opened my eyes again, I thought that everything that had happened earlier in the day had been a horrible dream, but then I came face to face with the harsh reality of life.
