The next day, back to reality on the ward round, Marcus hoped the time they’d spent together over the weekend wouldn’t make it awkward at work—but she had said at the party he could treat her like the annoying midwife she was.
The thought made him smile. There was no doubt his little midwife did cause some measure of agitation in his manly chest and he was thinking of her more than he should. He’d really not planned to be distracted by anyone for a while but he had the feeling there wasn’t a lot he could do about it now.
Tilly intrigued and amused him and turned him on with just a glimpse of her.
Later in the day he wasn’t feeling quite so warm and fuzzy.
He’d gone down to the ward again to see his private patient, a woman who’d had a previous Caesarean because her induced labour had gone on too long, and now her second baby was due in two weeks.
Stella’s repeat Caesarean operation had been arranged for the next day and he’d ordered a foetal monitoring session in the ward to check on her baby. Instead of a woman preparing for surgery he found that after an hour of exposure to Tilly, his patient had suddenly decided she’d like to cancel the operation, wait to go into labour naturally and try to have a vaginal birth.
Marcus suppressed a sigh. He’d had no idea Stella would prefer that. Had he missed something in their previous conversations or had Tilly swayed her?
He glanced at Tilly who looked back innocently. ‘That’s your right, of course, Stella,’ he agreed. ‘And, yes, it’s true this baby may not be as big, although the ultrasound says a reasonable size.’
Stella peered at him as if to discern his own feelings about it all but that didn’t help him figure out what she really wanted. He wasn’t sure whether to blame Tilly or thank her.
Suddenly Stella burst into speech. ‘If anything changed and I needed a Caesarean, would I still be able to have it?’
He tilted his head and frowned. It was a worry if he gave that impression. ‘Of course you would. No problem. If you want to try a normal birth again, I’m with you all the way. Is that what you want?’
He didn’t hold grudges with pregnant women. ‘I thought you wanted the Caesarean because you were so exhausted from your last labour?’ If that did happen again to her he’d quite happily strangle Tilly for encouraging her to go through a long first stage again.
‘Tilly says if I go into labour naturally hormones are released that help my baby breathe better after birth. And Caesarean babies have a much greater risk of ending up in Neonatal Intensive Care.’
It was a risk they took every day but Caesareans were so common they didn’t include that in pre-talks any more. ‘That’s all true.’
‘You didn’t mention that.’ Her brows creased and Marcus kept his face neutral.
‘I’m sorry. I thought you’d decided on the operative birth. I didn’t want you to feel I was being negative about your choice.
