The Wolf

I have been wandering for days, weeks or maybe months. I can’t really remember, and I’m not taking any notice. Or maybe the wolf in me doesn’t understand the passing of time.

The trees blur past as I run through them. I am fast as a wolf. My four legs carry me on further into the unknown.

I notice other things—the way the birds stay silent or flitter about when I get near.

I can no longer smell the saltiness of the ocean or hear the calming of the trees in the Butler area.

The smell is more polluted with decaying bones of the animals that my paws tread over. The rotting vegetation and slimy moss on rocks and trees makes me miss home.

Before I realise it, my body is being thrown against the tree.

Argh! I groan. I get to all fours and shake my head. I survey myself quickly—no injuries I can’t recover from quickly.

The hairs on my body bristles as I face my attacker.

The person looks younger than me. But I can’t really tell. The blond of his hair seems brighter with the sun. He stands in a smug sort of way. My wolf can’t really tell.

His blue eyes narrow as his lips purse.

He runs towards me with his fists in the air.

I dodge his punch, and all the training I have done with my pack kicks in.

After spinning to reposition myself, I snaps at his ankles. The pungent smell of iron and sulphur fills the air, and the person yells in agony.

He stands, and his nostrils flare as pure hatred spreads across his facial features.

‘Stupid wolf.’ He glares as he runs at me again.

Only this time, I leap over his head and bite down on his shoulder. With the strength he displays, I know he isn’t human but a supernatural being of some sort.

He punches my ribs, but I don’t really feel a thing.

I don’t let go of his shoulder, but just chomp down harder. The sour taste of his blood makes me release him, and I cough to expel the foul-tasting fluid.

He retreats and runs slowly from tree to tree.

I howl my triumph.

It gives me the strength to run home. My need to see Park is more prominent now than ever before.

Being a wolf isn’t so bad. I’m more in tune with my inner animal compared to when I first changed. We have bonded over the months. And it’s easier to follow my instincts.

And right now, they take me to where I really want to be.
