TWO AND a half hours later, Thompson and Garner walked down the dock with Thompson’s arms locked securely under Garner’s elbow, keeping his hand elevated. The emergency room doctor had confirmed Thompson’s fears that he’d sliced into the radial artery that supplied the main blood flow to the index finger. He’d received five stiches in all, two inside and three outside. But the doctor said there would be no lasting effects, and he’d be good as new in a few weeks.

Just before they’d left the hospital, the nurse had tried to give Garner a couple of pain pills and an envelope containing a few more for later, but he’d refused them, arguing why take the pills if he wasn’t sure he would need them. Thompson had forced the envelope in Garner’s pocket, just in case.

“Boy, am I hungry,” Garner whined. “Can you grill tuna?”

“I’ll do my best,” Thompson said with a grin.

When they reached the cockpit, Garner pointed to the lazaret. “The propane tank is in there.”

Thompson opened the storage compartment and turned the tank’s valve to the on position. He heard a slight hiss as the propane filled the hose and he closed the lid. Within minutes he had the grill going and starting to heat up.

“Tuna’s in the fridge along with the mango topping,” Garner explained. “The brown rice is in the microwave and all you need to do is put it on for ninety seconds, and of course you know where the beans are.”

“I’ve got this,” Thompson assured him. “Why don’t you lie back and keep that hand above your shoulder. I’ll be right back.”

Down below, Thompson put the heat back under the beans, gave them a stir, and rummaged through the refrigerator for the tuna steaks and mango. He opened the drawer looking for grilling tools and found the bloodstained knife still lying where they’d left it. He put the knife in the sink and grabbed the tongs.

When he was again topside, Garner was right where he’d left him. Thompson put the tuna on the grill and took a seat next to him. “What can I get you?”

Garner smiled weakly. “A glass of that wine you brought might be nice.”

“Do you think it’s a good idea to drink? What if you need to take one of those pain pills?”

“I’ll be fine, Mom,” Garner said. “I have a high tolerance for pain and pills.”

“Okayyyyy! You’re the doctor,” Thompson said.

Obviously surprised, Garner sat up. “What did you say?”

“Dr. Garner P. Holt. I saw it on your credit card when I paid the hospital bill. Why didn’t you tell me you’re a doctor?”

“Well, for starters,” Garner explained, “I’m retired. Secondly, it never came up. And lastly, I hate people who throw the title around.”

Thompson considered his answer.

Before he could respond, Garner asked, “Is it a problem?”

“Of course not. I was just surprised.”

Garner sat up and gave him a strange look. “What? Do I look too stupid to be a doctor?”

“Well, actually, now that you mention it…,” Thompson said.

“Asshole.”

Thompson howled. “Of course it’s not that, you idiot.
