Chapter 9

Outside Barney’s bar, I blinked in the sudden sunshine. He had everything dark and black inside his establishment. Probably for the vamps and other supernaturals who didn’t like too much light. I chuckled as I grasped the heavy file to my chest. At least with my necromancy craziness, I didn’t have to worry about the sun or drinking blood. Yay me!

I crossed the street to my car and plopped the file in the seat next to me.

Instead of heading straight to the outskirts of town where Sylvia said I’d find these Simus and his blacksmith forge, I swung my car in the direction of Chelsea’s. My best friend and she was also a witch. She might be able to help me figure out if Scott was the sorcerer or not.

She was always so energetic and bubbly. In school, she’d been one of the cheerleaders with her blond curls and super sweet personality. The only popular kid I’d known who wasn’t stuck-up and would talk to anyone. She had tons of friends, and I never understood why she singled me out in tenth grade, except that she was super nice. I mean, we were on opposite sides of the social spectrum in many ways including looks. My dark hair and pale skin clashed with her California girl image. And I’d been so moody in school—a throwback wanna be “goth girl”—gamer, who read way more than she did anything fun.

Chelsea had changed that. Brought me into her world and lightened my mood.

I drove down the road toward her apartment. If it wasn’t for her friendship, I would have been stuck at the supernatural hospital longer than I had been. She’d helped me escape and called up both Barney and Sylvia to aid me. If it hadn’t been for her, if I had gone through this alone, I might have jumped off a very high building or gone insane.

And she didn’t really like Scott. Had she subconsciously picked up on the fact he wasn’t what he claimed to be? Had she realized he was after my magic all along?

Since the accident, I hadn’t had much time to talk with her. My instinct told me that she might have insight into how to get my bracelet back and stop Scott from using my power again. Plus I wanted to see her and catch-up on normal, non-dead stuff. I sent her a quick text at a stoplight and got her reply that she was home.
