Chapter 27
After Sam left, I headed to the parking lot where I’d left my car. Just as I was unlocking the door, my phone rang.
“Oh good, I caught you,” Carrie started off. “I just got a call from Quinn. She’s on the ferry heading to the island. I told her when I spoke to her yesterday that she could just use Jessica’s car while she was on the island because Jessica isn’t here to use it this summer. That way, she wouldn’t have to rent one. She told me she was going to take an Uber from the airport and then just walk on to the ferry, and I planned to pick her up at the ferry terminal in Sea Haven. But when she called just now, she told me she caught an earlier flight and is actually on her way right now. I told her I wasn’t on the island today, and she said she could grab an Uber out to the house, but if you aren’t busy and don’t mind picking her up…”
“I’d be happy to. The surf competition just wrapped up, so I’ll head in that direction now. I’ll text her to let her know to look for me when the ferry arrives.”
“Thanks,” Carrie said in a tone indicating relief. “I felt bad about being off-island when she called.”
“How’s the shopping going?”
“Really well. Nora is helping me pick out a bunch of new furniture for the condo. I was just going to move my old stuff over, but she convinced me to go new with pretty much everything, so now I think I’ll sell or donate a lot of it. I really think having a new look for my living space is going to help me to move on.”
I slipped off my sandal and wiped the sand from my foot before slipping it back on. The last thing I needed was to transfer half the beach to my car. “I hope so, and I’m glad you are having a good day. I should go, so I’m there by the time the ferry arrives. Will you and Nora still be back for dinner?”
“No, I don’t think so. We’re still in San Francisco. We’ll probably just catch the last ferry out to the island tonight. You and Quinn can do something together this evening. Catch up a bit. Then the four of us can have a nice, long visit tomorrow.”
“Sounds good. And enjoy the rest of your day.”
After cleaning off my other foot, I tossed my bag in the trunk and slipped into the driver’s seat. I was sorry that Carrie and Nora were going to miss Quinn’s homecoming, but I was actually happy to have the chance to spend some one-on-one time with her. As I’ve said in the past, of all the members of the summer six—with the exception of Kayla, of course—Quinn and I were the most alike.
Unlike most little girls with big dreams and even larger imaginations, Quinn knew exactly what she wanted from life from a very early age.
