CHAPTER 11

The following morning, Lucy and I stopped by the Cup and Bean Coffee Shop after our run. I had relayed everything I had learned about Lainey and her family to Alec the previous night. I would have liked to say he was close to finding the killer. He wasn’t. But I had the utmost confidence there would be a break in the case soon.

“I’m going to get an iced caramel latte,” Lucy said, looking up at the menu board. “Fall will be here before you know it, and it will be too cold to drink iced coffees.”

I nodded. “Then we’d better enjoy our iced coffee while we can. But I’m more than ready for a pumpkin spice latte.”

She groaned. “Oh, don’t say that. It’s all I’ve been thinking about for weeks now, and you know we can’t have one for several more weeks.”

I nodded, and we stepped up to the counter and gave the barista our orders. Then I turned to Lucy. “I’ve been experimenting with making my own pumpkin spice lattes. They’re okay, but they’re not the same as getting them at a coffee shop.”

“At least you’re daring enough to try,” she said. “All I do is sit around and dream about them. Well, honestly, I’m dreaming about pumpkin spice anything.” She chuckled.

“Me too. When I get done with these blueberry cheesecakes I’m making, maybe I’ll make some pumpkin cream cheese muffins.”

She groaned. “Now you’re torturing me. You’ve got to make them. I need one.”

I paid for our iced coffees, and we headed over to Mr. Winters’ table. “Good morning, Mr. Winters.”

He looked up from his newspaper and pushed his glasses back up on his nose. “Good morning, ladies. What’s new?”

We sat down across from him, and Lucy reached underneath the table and patted Sadie’s head. “Unfortunately, not enough. Have you found out anything?” I asked.

He pressed his lips together. “I wish I had something big. I still feel terrible that the Easley’s daughter was murdered. But I was thinking; if she arrived in town for Christmas, how come no one saw her?”

I shook my head. “That is an excellent question, but unfortunately, it’s one we don’t have an answer to yet. But we’ll figure it out.”

Lucy took a sip of her coffee. “Yes, we’ll figure it out. I think it’s strange that nobody will admit to having seen her, so my guess is the killer saw her and doesn’t want to let anyone know they did. They’re trying to distance themselves from her completely.”

“I think you’re right,” I said. “We know she arrived in town for Christmas, so maybe the friend who picked her up from the airport is her killer.”

“So, who picked her up from the airport?” Mr. Winters asked.

I shook my head. “She only told her parents a friend was picking her up. She never mentioned a name.”

I glanced up when I saw someone heading in our direction. It was Dave Evans, the Easley Farms manager. I smiled at him. “Hey, Dave, how are you?”

He nodded, one hand in the pocket of his windbreaker, the other holding a cup of coffee.
