Chapter 9

Ruby

For the few days after Ruby and Trent spent the Fourth of July together, made kettle corn, and watched the old classic Paint your Wagon, she alternated between stark sadness that Sandy wasn’t there with bright awareness that her grandson was.

There was so much Ruby didn’t know about Sandy. She never mentioned that she’d been married and had a daughter. Why not? Did Ruby really know Sandy at all? Then thoughts like those transitioned to the fact that she had so much to learn about Trent—from basics like favorites of all sorts to what had broken his family to keep him away for the last couple of decades to why he was such a grump about Christmas.

Given the fact that Sandy had given her the ultimatum to marry Trent or forfeit the Inn, she contemplated whether they could try to make it work. Of course, they could just get married, sign the deed to the property over, and then divorce the next day, but Ruby held marriage as a sacred union between two people. Even though she never imagined she’d say I do, especially after what her mother told her about no man ever being interested, it seemed like Trent genuinely liked her.

In the previous days, he was up early and got the coffee brewing, always fixing it the way she liked. He even made a batch of muffins, which was a big surprise. The ones from the freezer were great, but there was nothing like something fresh from the oven.

He’d spend the days assessing each room in the Inn and what absolutely had to be done as well as ideas for what could be done to improve the spaces. He told Ruby that he was intent on maintaining the integrity of what always made the Inn special while modernizing when possible for an even more comfortable stay. He was a font of knowledge about all kinds of things, including upgrading water heaters to save space, water, and ensure that guests had warm water on call at all times. It was one thing for him to create the list of improvements. Paying for them was another matter altogether that Ruby couldn’t bear to think about.

What she did have to think about was the Christmas in July Jubilee. Whether or not she and Trent got married, she owed it to Sandy along with the rest of the town and beyond to put on the best celebration they’d had yet.

To get in the mood, she pulled out Sandy’s Christmas carol records and put a Christmas classics album on the player. Joy to the World boomed from the speakers.

“This one is for you, Sandy,” she said and started to sing along.

Footsteps pounded down the stairs. Trent appeared, covering his ears. He held a clipboard in one hand as well. “What is that racket?”

Ruby twirled toward him, still singing along. The tune brought joy to her heart as she reflected on the birth of Christ the Savior and what it meant to the world, to her, and to Sandy.
