I was released from the hospital three days ago, but Elliot wasn’t. They kept him for further testing, whatever the hell that meant. Plus, he was in an induced coma to try to help with the swelling in his head. Today, they were certain he’d be awake, and I wanted to be there. I parked my car, the one thing my parents hadn’t taken from me, in the hospital parking garage. I got out and looked around for Zach who was supposed to meet me by the elevators.

“Hey, Kiddo.” Zach came over and kissed my head. He had a huge smile on his face. “He’s awake and asking for you.”

I panicked. “He woke up without me there?” I started walking fast. “Zach, he wasn’t supposed to! Did he freak out?” I made it to the elevator and started pushing the button over and over. “Open, dammit!” I hit my fist against the door.

“Yes, he freaked. I had to do a lot of talking to get him to calm down. He still isn’t completely calm. I don’t think he will be until he sees you.” He grabbed my hand to stop me from attacking the elevator button. “Deep breaths. He’s awake and talking. That’s more than anyone thought would happen.”

I took a deep breath and looked at Zach as I let it out. “Do I look okay?” I frowned when he started laughing at me.

“You look fine.” He tugged on my curls. “Besides, he’s seen you without all your makeup and nice clothes.”

I nodded and took another deep breath and let it out. “Don’t tell him I found a job. I know karate.”

He held up his hands. “I won’t. But he’s going to be upset when he realizes it.”

“Yeah…” I looked at the door. “What’s wrong with this damn elevator?”

At that moment the elevator opened. “Just have to patient, Kid.”

We went in, and it took decades for it to take us up. When we got to ICU, they let me in immediately. I followed the nurse as she talked, but I didn’t hear a thing she said. I just wanted Elliot. She opened the door, and I went in, only to stop immediately. Violent sobs escaped me when his eyes met mine, and I felt like I was going to crumble right to the floor. I slowly walked over to him and sat down beside him. I touched his face as I cried.

“Look at you…” I whispered.

Elliot leaned into my touch, and then with his good arm, he pulled me to him. He knotted his hand in my hair and held onto me. “You both are okay, right?” he asked, his voice breaking.

I couldn’t even answer him because I was crying so hard. I was just so happy to have his hand in my hair and hear his voice. I nodded the best I could and put my hand on his.

“I love you, Elliot Shaw. Don’t you ever try leaving me again.”

“I love you, too. So much. I was so scared you…” He stopped as tears filled his eyes.
