CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
THAYNE
I cross the parking lot, gear bag dangling from my fingers on one hand while pressing the lock button on my key fob with the other. The security beep echoes through the full lot and down the dock, drawing my attention in that direction. Aside from our charter and a couple rentals, in opposition to the lot, the marina is pretty empty; everyone is out on the water enjoying their Saturday afternoon.
A splash of the sudsy water arcs out of the boat cabin, and Carrick appears right after. With a thud, I drop my bag at the edge of the dock and step onto the deck. Carrick has earbuds in, so I let out a sharp whistle.
His attention whips up as he rips out one of the earbuds, and a grin brightens his face when he recognizes me. âHey, man! Feels like I havenât seen you in ages. Want to give me a hand?â
I force a smile and calm my breathing to keep my nostrils from flaring in response to his immediate coolness. Luckily for him, Lainie showed up on my doorstep three nights ago and Carrick and I are only just now crossing paths, giving me plenty of time to manage my temper going into this.
I wordlessly grab the extra scrub brush from the V-berth and get to work on the far side. As is habitual before a charter, we start running through the typical topics. I start by asking, âWhat were the conditions? Where is Deb?â
âAfter our first dive, the visibility was roughly thirty feet and the water temp at the bottom was about seventy-six. Thermal change is around fifteen feet. Temp above the thermal climate was eighty. After the second dive, visibility changed to twenty feet or so. Things are getting rough out thereâ
Carrick pauses to take in an extra breath, and his hand comes to his chest. âI feel like I ran a damn marathon instead of going out on a dive. Anyway, as for Deb, she followed the customers off and went straight to her car.â
âSeriously?â My eyes roll right along with the boat rolling slightly under our feet as a couple wave runners coast past.
âYeah. I have just about lost all patience with her.â Carrick presses his lips together, shakes his head, and continues scrubbing, only keeping one hand on the handle. The other hand hangs loose at his side.
I swear there is a tremor in his fingers, but on the double take, his hand lifts to join the other. âThe only reason why I still put up with her bullshit is because she hinted toward signing off on more than the allotted four offshore hours per day as long as I come in and do the extra work.â
I abruptly straighten from being bent over scrubbing and cast a glare over my shoulder toward the parking lot. Sure enough, Deb is sitting in her car, tapping away at her phone.
Deb has never been the lead by example type, but now she is just getting stupid.
