Chapter Sixteen

Kerrigan dashed through the rain toward the butter yellow country craftsman house where her brother and his girlfriend Jaia lived and escaped up the stairs to the refuge of the covered front porch to ring the doorbell.

Rapid footsteps approached the door and Jaia pulled it open. “Oh, you’re soaked,” she exclaimed in her soft British/Indian accent, reaching for her.

Kerrigan returned the hug. “I know, and I only ran up your pathway.” She pulled away, smiled at the smaller woman with the long, dark hair and liquid black eyes. Jaia had not only won her brother’s heart, but Kerrigan’s as well, and pretty much everyone else who met her.

“So, what do you want me to take over?” she asked. “I brought Travis’s SUV, so I’ve got lots of room.” They and some of the other Crimson Point ladies had planned a dual baby shower for Tiana and Poppy. It had started out as a surprise, but that hadn’t lasted long.

“I’ve got some of the trays here,” Jaia said, stepping back to grab a couple off the table in the entryway. “Fruit platter—with chocolates, as requested—meat and cheese, and a cake. If you could take these and the balloons, that’d be amazing.”

“On it.” She stacked the trays and made a dash back through the rain to put them in the back hatch of the SUV, then returned for the balloons. “God, this rain is unbelievable!” she said with a laugh, reaching for the weighted bouquets Jaia handed her.

“Are you picking up Tiana on the way?”

“Yes. See you there.” The helium-filled balloons bounced against each other as she ran back to the SUV, shoved them inside the hatch, and jumped behind the wheel. The back window was totally blocked.

Her wipers could barely keep up with the deluge on her way over to Tiana and Mac’s place. Salt Spray Lane was blanketed by fog, the turret and steeply pitched roofline of Beckett and Sierra’s grand Victorian rising out of the mist as she passed by to the smaller house tucked in amongst the cedars and firs at the end of the street.

At least here she was somewhat sheltered by the towering evergreens, so she didn’t get any wetter on the way to the front door. Tiana answered it a moment later, and Kerrigan’s smile slipped.

“What’s wrong?” she demanded, grabbing Tiana’s arm in alarm. Her friend’s face was pale and drawn, the smattering of freckles across her nose and cheeks standing out against her ivory skin.

Rather than answer, Tiana sucked in a breath and grimaced as she clung to Kerrigan’s hand, hunching over slightly. “Don’t think I’ll be making it to the shower,” she gasped out.

Holy shit, she was in labor. Kerrigan stepped inside, leading Tiana toward the couch across the living room. “How long have you been having pains?”

“About forty minutes. Didn’t think much of it at first. Wasn’t expecting this to happen so early. Or get so intense so fast.” She pulled free of Kerrigan’s hand and turned for the kitchen.

“Where’s Mac?” Kerrigan asked, trailing after her.
