Chapter 13

Mediterranean Sea

Early Evening, Tuesday, 19 June

Scott felt a swell of panic as he entered the infirmary, eyes fixed on the bright lights shining behind the thin curtains. A nurse had just entered the makeshift surgery room, but he hadn’t seen her so much as the blood soaking her outer gown.

His heart raced from the quick run, and his thoughts were disjointed from the adrenaline coursing through his system. “Take one side of the room. I’ll take the other.”

Edie looked as tired as he felt. The implications of what they’d discussed briefly just before entering were terrifying. “Shouldn’t we stay together? I mean we may have better results.” She pulled him to the first occupied bed, touched a hand to the side of the injured man’s face to see if he would open his eyes. “Can you hear me? Are you able to answer my questions?”

The man’s eyes fluttered, but only opened partially. Scott hurried off to the next bed, Edie a step behind until he pointed to a sickbed on the opposite side of the room. He shook the sleeping woman’s shoulder. “Very sorry,” he said, “I need to ask you about the attack. It’s important.”

The woman’s eyes opened and closed. She tried to focus. “I’m listening. Did they get them?”

“Get who?” he said.

“Get the terrorists who did this,” she said.

The pain in her voice gave him pause, but he pressed on. “That’s why I need your help. Tell me about what happened to you?” She wasn’t from Shepherd. He knew everyone from his boat. “Were you on the Bardot?”

“Wait, you’re him aren’t you?” she said. “I know your voice. You’re, Scott, from Sea Shepherd. I’m Peyton from Bardot. I’ve heard your voice so many times on the maritime… It all happened so quickly.”

He nodded, glanced at his watch. 15 minutes. Her voice was familiar to him as well, he just hadn’t realized it before. He saw the position of Bardot on the map in his mind’s eye. “I really need you to answer some questions. Can you close your eyes and think back to the attack? Where you were? What you saw?”

“Can I help you?” said a voice behind him.

He glanced over his shoulder, saw only the hospital blues. “Scott Evers,” he said, extending his hand back without turning around. “Just need to ask some questions to get to the bottom of things.”

Her firm grip was surprising, and Scott found himself nodding as she asked him something he didn’t really hear. His focus was on Peyton who was trying to tell him what she saw. Something about flashes of light in the dark. “Go on,” he told her.

“I was on deck when it happened, watching the helo come in. We were supposed to take on one of theirs. An oceanographer, I think,” Peyton said breathlessly. “Then a flash of light and another. Jumping over is the only thing that saved me.”

Scott’s head bobbed in agreement, jumping overboard had saved him and Edie too. He squeezed her hand reassuringly while his eyes urged her to continue.
