It’s so early the next morning that the sun hasn’t even come up yet.

I’m approaching the edge of pack land when I smell him. Amber, cocoa, and that musky masculinity I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of.

I stop so suddenly that my bag bumps into my back. Closing my eyes, I sigh. “You shouldn’t want anything to do with me, Gavin.”

"It was your eyes,” he says suddenly.

I tell myself not to ask, but I do it anyway. “I don’t understand.”

“The reason I can’t let you walk away is because of your eyes.”

He walks toward me, his boots snapping fallen twigs as he approaches. But I still don’t turn. “Go back to your packmates, Gavin.”

Go find someone who deserves a nice guy who knows how to listen, doesn’t mind doing the washing up, and deserves to be happy. Someone not me.

“I thought I was happy being alone, and I thought I’d learned to be content seeing my packmates settle down, fall in love, and have kids. I didn’t realize how empty and closed-off I’d made myself. Until…”

He’s standing just behind me now. “Until?” I ask with my heart in my throat.

“Until I went to a tiny town in New York. I overheard a woman blaming herself for nearly killing her alpha, and I saw the pain bleeding out of the most beautiful blue eyes I’ve ever seen in my life. As she slipped past me, I knew she hated the idea of leaving her home and her family. And I knew she was doing it with the misguided belief she was protecting them. That was when I knew the woman was mine.”

My eyes prickle as I grip the straps of my bag. “You didn't see what you think you saw,” I whisper.

“Wrong. Do you know how I can be so sure?” he asks.

I don't respond.

Gavin grabs my arms and swings me around. He’s dressed in black jeans, boots, and a khaki t-shirt with a black duffel on his back. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone looking so determined in my life.

“Because I felt her pain as if it were my own. You are mine, Blair Hunt, and everything in me: man, wolf, everything I am, knows it,” he says.

I struggle to absorb his words. I want to believe he’s just saying them, but I look in his eyes and every fiber of my being knows he means them, utterly and completely. He’s felt like a part of me since I met him, so I think I know exactly how he feels—and what he feels—because I feel it too.

Smiling faintly, he tucks a strand of my hair behind my ear. “So now you've ruined me.”

I blink, confused. “Ruined you? How have I done that?”

He slides his palm around the nape of my neck and tilts my head up. “For anyone else. The only one I want to make happy is you, and you are the only one who can make me happy.”

"I threaten to kill you,” I remind him. “How can you be happy with someone who threatens to kill you on a daily basis?”

“Easily.
