Chapter Fourteen
Shannon bounced on her toes, her apple green eyes sparkling as she shoved the heavy box toward me. “Here!” Her hands clasped together as she bit into her bottom lip. “I really hope you’ll like it.”
I sighed, tugging at the dark wrapping paper swathed in stars. “Do you guys buy stock in wrapping paper companies?” I muttered. The box was heavier than I had expected. I actually had to exert effort to pick it up and slide away the remainder of the wrapping paper before I carefully pried it open. I squealed as I slid the first of the books from the heavy package. The sound caught in my throat as I got a better look at them, and I turned wide eyes to Shannon. “Is this…” I trailed off, flipping the book open to check before I closed it softly again, holding the fragile cover carefully. “It’s a first edition,” I whispered reverently, my eyes turning back to her. I glanced in horror at the box. “Those aren’t all first editions, right?” I pleaded. The amount of money that would have been in that box if they were all first editions would probably put the car Alarick had bought me to shame.
“No,” Shannon assured me. “I… I gave you a few of my favorites.” She shrugged, threading and unthreading her hands. “I knew you liked to read—you’ve left your Kindle out on the bed a few times or your app up on your phone. You didn’t have any hard copy books, though, and I thought maybe you’d like some.” She angled her head to the box and began helping to pull books out. “You seemed to have a preference for romance, so I stuck to a lot of the classics.” The books she pulled out were gorgeous, and even if they weren’t all first editions they were clearly old and beautifully cared for copies. As she shifted another book, I ducked around her, a shocked cry falling from my lips as covers caught my attention.
I tugged out one with a purple and black cover, stroking my finger across the gold title. Rage by K.A. Knight. The next book I grabbed was done in series of grays and whites, Smoke and Wishes by A.J. Macey. Below that was The Darkness in Me by Katie May, the purple and white cover glowing in the light of the room. I nearly whimpered as I stroked fingers across the pretty tomes. “Shiny…” I drooled.
“Jeez, did you break her?” Chann murmured in shock, as I stroked loving fingers across my new treasures, resisting the urge to coo at them.
“I took a look at your Kindle,” Shannon admitted, a slight blush coloring her cheeks. “There’s more.” She indicated the rest with a wave.
I dove back into the box, having to lean over the sides to see deep enough under the mounds of tissue paper. “No way!” I yelped, as I pulled more paperbacks from the depths. A card was clipped to the first book on the stack, and I slid it out gently with shaking fingers to open it.
