Our last night together, holding each other, sobbing uncontrollably, it feels like we’re one person being slowly and violently torn into two dead halves.

Mark drives me to the Blue Box Diner for pancakes one last time, our final farewell. We sit in our booth, the one he insisted we sit in the day we met. It’s January 23rd.

I smear butter across my short stack, douse it in syrup, and eat two bites before putting down my fork for good. “Do you think we can be friends after this?” I stare down at my plate, afraid to make eye contact with him; if he says no, I won’t know how to handle it.

“I would . . . love that, yeah. More than anything. I don’t think it’ll be possible right away. Probably not for a while. But hopefully, eventually, one day we can be friends. You’re my best friend. Rachel Rachel Rachel.”

“Mark Mark Mark.”

“Can you please call me tomorrow and just let me know that you’re . . . uh . . .”

“Still a thing that’s out there? Can do.”

“Yep. Thank you.” His French dip has one measly bite missing. The magnificent au jus sits, cold and cloudy. “Ya know, it’s weird, I thought this breakup was gonna be the easiest one of the five because you aren’t rejecting me. I thought that was what made it so hard. But this is much much worse than the other times. It’s a lot harder when you still wanna be with me but the universe has conspired to keep us apart.”

“The universe can suck my butthole.”

“Agreed. Eat shit, universe.”
