Chapter Nine

“You want to go for a walk?” I needed to break the silence. The fact that Declan had said he was relieved that Lennox had gone was a shock, but it could’ve been a self-defense mechanism against a broken heart.

Imagine being Declan. Imagine growing up in a conservative, but loving home, only to be thrown out the very moment he needed them.

At least my family loved me under all their macho misunderstanding of the kind of man I was, and they had started to come round to getting who I really was. They hadn’t thrown me out—I always knew I had a family—they just made things difficult by shoving so many expectations on me that I turned around and hid from them. I never wanted to be a disappointment to them, and instead I’d just ended up disappointing myself.

“I was going to get my coat, but I can’t even think of going up there. The flowers, and the gifts, and the card, it’s too much. I was so fucking stupid; I didn’t see it…” He scrubbed at his face, and I clambered up and extended a hand to help him, and if I held onto his hand a little longer than a friend might, then sue me. If I laced our fingers and didn’t let go, then that was just because he seemed wobbly, and not because I wanted to hold him close. We got to the door of his suite, and I held out a hand for the keycard, which he gave me after a pause.

“It’s just a room,” I announced as I pushed the door open. “You sit here.” I nudged him to the sofa and shoved him harder when he balked at sitting, and then gave in, although he shut his eyes and slumped. I opened the doors to the balcony and glanced at the various bits and pieces that made this Honeymoon Central.

The just married sign was easy to bury in the pot holding a Christmas tree, but I considered the tree. Was it wedding-y? It was decorated in gold and red, not the blues and silvers of the wedding, and it was Christmas, so I left it as it was. The confetti petal things I tossed over the side into the snow; the hot tub sign—probably meant to be a quirky welcome to the happy couple—was easy to pry off, even if it left scratches. I’d just offer to pay for damages. Then, it was the bedroom with yet more petals, and another duck/swan shape on the floor where it had been thrown. The bed was tidy, and unless housekeeping were all in-house and not traveling up from the town, it looked as if it hadn’t been slept in. Also, wouldn’t they have picked up the swan? I found pillows in the cozy chair in the corner, along with blankets similar to the ones he’d given me, and it didn’t take much to connect the dots that he’d slept in the chair, but had still given me the marginally more comfortable sofa.
