Part IV.

Ernie stood over the couple, rage making him red in the face as he shouted obscenities.

“You no-good, low-class, spawn of Satan! Get the hell away from my daughter!” Ernie shouted violently, pulling at the blankets which covered them. “How dare you violate her! I’ll see you in prison you fucking scumbag!!”

As Holly and Matt scrambled to cover themselves. Disoriented, the lights glaring brightly, she clutched at the blanket.

Holly pleaded with her father, sensing that the situation had the potential to become dangerous. She had to tell him— had to make him understand, this wasn’t Matt’s fault. “Daddy! Please! Listen…! I love him!”

Ernie shook off her hand and shouted at her. “Go get dressed.” He flung her from him, and she fell to the floor.

He hissed, “You look like a five-dollar whore. You’re a disgrace. Go! Now!”

Holly couldn’t hide the tears streaming down her face as she choked out a protest.

Holly gathered up her dress and the blanket, running on bare feet back to the dressing room.

Matt had managed to pull on his clothes in the chaos and he stood, ramrod straight, and attempted to speak. Stiffly, he said, “Sir… Ernie…Let me explain. I do love her…”

The fist that came flying at him almost hit its target, but Matt ducked in time and Ernie found himself putting his fist through the canvas side of a painted set piece.

He swore vigorously, cradling his fist.

Matt tried once more, “I know I’m not your favorite person, but please—“

“—You have thirty minutes to clear your things out of my house. Thirty minutes and then I’m calling the cops and having you arrested for rape, for trespassing, for stealing— for any damned thing they’ll lock you up for. Do you understand!? I want you out of our lives, now!” Ernie barked at him.

Matt’s jaw stiffened and his fists clenched. He knew it would be beyond useless to try and reason with Ernie, to try and tell him just how much he loved Holly. Ernie’s hatred of him ran far too deep for that.

Ernie continued berating him, trying his best to get in a good swing with his fists. “I was too soft. I should have kicked you out on your ass the second you turned eighteen, but I was too god-damned soft. Now, get the hell out of my sight.”

Matt turned to leave, but Ernie managed to grab his shirt collar. Matt was almost a head taller than Ernie, but Ernie made up for his stature in girth and brawn.

“Anything I paid for, you leave behind, you hear me? Or I’ll have you arrested for stealing. Computer, electronics— everything.”

Matt gave him a contemptuous look that Ernie did not miss.

“You come sniffing around my door again, or around Holly, and I swear to God, boy, they won’t ever find your body.”

Matt shook him off, the strength of the gesture causing Ernie to stumble backwards and unleash a string of epithets once more.

“I’ll have you arrested for assaulting me, do you hear!” He shouted at Matt’s departing back.
