Brigid sleeps the entire way back to Aberdeen, which gives me the time I need to process what she told me.

Avery Black. He’s a dead man. And tonight, Trick and I will begin tracking this motherfucker down.

I don’t even know the full extent of what he did to Brigid—because I know there’s more than what she told me—but I don’t need to. Anyone and everyone who has ever laid their hands on her will pay.

Donovan most of all. He let this happen to her. Beyond his abuse, which is already bad enough, he let some other man hurt my girl. Maybe other men, too, if I had to guess. I can’t imagine that Avery was the only person he allowed to hurt her.

Before the end, I will get every single name of every single person who ever hurt Brigid, and no force in this world will stop me from avenging her.

And God, Brigid has been forced to kill someone. My hands tighten on the steering wheel until they turn white, my fury on her behalf nearly overtaking me. I force myself to take several long breaths, counting as high as I can before I continue thinking through things. Brigid can’t know just how strongly I’ve been affected by her truths. I never want her to have reason to question my anger, and whether it’s aimed at her. I’m never angry with her, could never be angry with her.

Avery being here is anything but a coincidence. There is no way he just randomly happened to be in a mall in the middle of nowhere the same day we were. The question is, is he the one who ransacked Brigid’s apartment? Is he here on behalf of Donovan? Or is he acting on his own?

What other monstrous things did he do to Brigid?

The drive back to Aberdeen goes by much quicker than I would like, and before I know it, I’m pulling up to a security gate in front of Trick’s house.

Fortress is more like it. The entire property is surrounded by a tall fence, and to get into the driveway, you have to call the house from a little speaker. I press the button, and the gate opens immediately without Trick having to even speak to me.

The house itself sits atop a tall hill, overlooking the town of Aberdeen. There are a handful of other houses up here, all massive with large amounts of land surrounding them. Trick’s is the only one that has a fence and a gate like this, though. The locals probably think he’s paranoid, and he might be just a little. But I know Trick is also cautious. Our line of work comes with more than a few dangers, and Trick is on at least a few wanted lists for criminal organizations.

The driveway is long and winding, taking us even further into the hills before we arrive at the mansion. It’s three stories tall and sprawling. Too much room for one person to occupy on his own, but Trick likely uses all of the space for various jobs he does outside of what he does for me.
