Chapter Nine

The certainty that he would never feel this much contentment or joy again had plagued Nick from almost the very moment he'd left Jack. Of course that had been a mistake. It was way too fucking clear now. Even though he'd believed he was doing the right thing at the time by getting out of Jack's way, it hadn't been his decision to make. All he'd accomplished was to do what he'd always done. Tell Jack what to do. Not let him decide for himself. When Jack had begun to want other things apart from Nick, he'd reacted like a jerk. He'd become angry and--he realised now--jealous. He'd kept treating him like he was a kid instead of a man. Or his partner.

My own damn fault.

Was it possible they could be together now? They couldn't go back to where they'd left off, too much had changed. Would Jack really want a regular guy like him around all his fancy Hollywood friends? He'd lived with a movie star for Chrissakes. Nick wouldn't be able to attend any ritzy movie premieres with a glittering dame on his arm. And truthfully, he didn't want to. Jack would get gussied up and leave Nick behind whilst he went out to paint the town red. There would be plenty of times where Jack would have to do his emoting, or whatever else it was he did, and Nick would be left out.

I don't give a shit anymore. The last year has been hell. I'll take him however I can get him. If he'll let me.

Nick could feel how relaxed Jack was in his arms and thought he might be dozing off. He jostled him a little. "Hey, Jacky. We should wash ourselves off, get some clean bedclothes."

"Mmmm." Jack sounded sleepy. "Don't let me go, Nick. Please stay here."

Nick pressed a kiss to Jack's forehead, ignoring the sting in his lips. "I'll stay as long as you want me to."

Jack snuggled closer. "Good. Then I never want you to leave."

Nick's heart seemed to lurch in his throat. It was too much to hope for. "I wanna stay, Jacky boy, real bad. But..."

How could he explain what he'd been thinking, without it sounding just like one of their old fights again?

Jack twisted in his arms and lifted his head so that they were face to face. He looked heartbroken. "You mean...you don't want to?"

Nick scrunched his eyebrows. "I want to more than anythin'. I love you, remember?"

He couldn't believe he was able to say that out loud so easily now.

Amazing what a year of misery will do to a guy.

"Then what's wrong? Is it because I was with Roman?"

Nick shook his head in frustration. "No. Maybe." He sighed. "I don't mean cuz you was with somebody else. It's that you have lots of important people you know now. It's different. I ain't no movie star, and you know I was never comfortable with those kinda folks anyway. I'm afraid you ain't gonna wanna be associatin' with some regular guy.
