Lucas smiled when Mira huffed and stomped from the cabin. He had to admit, she was one cool cookie. He’d goaded her ten ways to Sunday and she hadn’t taken the bait—hadn’t even bothered to look him in the eye. If the aliens they were hunting resembled the people of Earth as closely as he suspected, there was a good chance they had emotions, feelings, and needs similar to a human’s. Even if Mira wasn’t an alien, it stood to reason she had a soft spot for something— maybe her family or friends? It sure as hell wasn’t past lovers.

He went to the window and found her standing at the railing, gazing at the magnificent view. The stream still ran at a sprinter’s pace, but the water seemed a few inches lower. The sun, a shining golden ball, glittered off the droplets and puddles that covered the surrounding vegetation and ground. Mountains in the distance formed a picture-postcard scene of green, purple, blue, and every color in between. Where did Mira come from? What was the weather like on her planet? Was she weighing the similarities between her home and Earth?

An eagle cried as it stretched wings overhead. Moments later, a second bird circled, and together the two swooped low over the forest. Gliding and soaring, they performed a breathtaking air show better than any he’d ever seen by the famed Blue Angels. Were they a bonded pair? He’d read that certain species of animals mated for life. Did eagles? Did anyone in today’s modern world?

Sitting across from Mira at breakfast had kept him on his toes, especially when bits and pieces of what they’d done in bed decided to take an encore in his brain. Warm skin, hot kisses, and trembling body parts combined to create a memorable fantasy. He recalled the dreamlike quality of their coupling, his fevered moans and her ragged whispers of encouragement... her shapely body and the way it molded perfectly to his...the climax that had left him breathless and longing for more.

The previous night, Mira had connected with a part of him he’d buried deep under layers of resentment and despair. He’d given up on finding a partner who could reach him there. How ironic that the one woman who could might be an alien.

Damn, but he wished he knew for sure.

If she was a thief, how was he supposed to justify to the president his having a relationship with a felon? If he turned her in and she was convicted, he’d be on the hot seat when word got out about the way they’d met. And it would be just as bad if he let her go. The police might bring him up on charges of aiding and abetting, and she’d be on the run from those thugs with no one to cover her back.

Mira’s shoulders rose and fell as if their current problem and a hundred more weighed her down, but Lucas hardened his resolve. He ran a hand through his hair, then walked outside.
