AS CARLY STANDS near the main street waiting for Dylan, she can only hope Adam doesn’t tap into him during their rendezvous. If she voices her concern to Dylan and he tells her not to worry about it, then she’ll know he can suppress their twin connection and Adam needs to learn how to do the same.

As soon as he appears, she slaps the taste out of his mouth with every ounce of physical strength in her. Her nostrils flare, her eyes dare him to challenge her, and she prays he gives her a reason to reduce him to ash, so she can tell Adam she had no choice.

The twisted freak smiles.

“Don’t be mad at me because you’re stupid.”

She lunges at him, wanting to take his head off. He runs, and she foolishly gives chase. He cackles until she realizes this is what he wants, so she stops.

“Aww giving up so quickly?”

“You’re pathetic. Are we gonna talk or not?”

“You guys are so freakin’ boring. Yeah, yeah. Let’s get this over with. Walk with me.” He extends his arm east, away from spectators.

She strolls with him.

“I shouldn’t even be here. If Adam sees me through your stupid eyes, he’ll never let me out of his sight again.”

“I wouldn’t worry about it.”

Bingo.

“Okay, so what is it? What are you demanding?”

“I’m not making any demands. No one has been taken for ransom. All I want is to be left alone.”

“In exchange for what?”

“Intel, of course.”

He’s already lied about his LR, she wonders how useful his information could be if he lies all the time.

“It’s impossible to trust you. You play so many games. You’re never serious.”

“That’s not true at all. I just believe in enjoying life. Not only do I like to have fun, I deserve it. You’ve been spoiled by your freedom, so it’s not like you’d understand. You’ve dedicated your life to saving a world that doesn’t care if you live or die but that’s neither here nor there. Those are my terms. Take em or leave em.”

She wants so badly to clap back, but he’s not worth it and she’s speaking on behalf of eleven other people. Well, hundreds really. She’d better put her personal feelings aside and choose wisely.

“Fine. But if I find out any information you provide is false, you’ll be hunted.”

He doesn’t like the sound of that and his entire facial expression changes. The devil Adam spoke of rears its head.

“You know? You seem to blindly trust your mate. From the moment I met you, you came across as a smart girl. Maybe I was wrong. You tried to hurt me with a truth once. About my mother, I believe it was.” He steps so close, his warm breath grazes her lips. He fixes his eyes on hers.

“Well now, here’s one for you. The people I’ve fucked, are only the ones your little boyfriend already wanted to. In all the sexual fantasizing he discussed in counseling, and journaled about, not once did he mention your name. All I did was live out his pathetic dreams.
